We are all now distrubingly aware of the most important stat for a QB. Yards per attempt. Even though this stat ranks my boy Mike Glennon very low, I have to be objective as it is very often the most telling stat about the performance of the QB position. So that be said, let's have a look at our new #1 QB prospect. You guessed it! Mr. Zach Mettenberger from LSU. Zach Mettenberger ranks #1 in yards/attempt of all QBs eligible for the 2014 draft at a whopping 10.4 yards per attempt!!! Zach is an unheralded guy who is currently projected as a 2-3 rounder who can make all the throws and has played as a full starter for two years in the nation's toughest division, SEC. In fact while digging up some info on the kid, the only negative people have to say about him is that he isn't very athletic. Here is the analysis on him as per CBS sports.STRENGTHS: Possesses a prototypical frame and arm for the position. Has shown steady improvement in reading defenses throughout his time at LSU, and drew praise over the 2013 summer for his quick pick-up of new offensive coordinator Cam Cameron's scheme. He can drive the ball to the opposite hash, loft the ball over the seam or to the back in the flat and hit receivers streaking down the sideline. Does a nice job of keeping his eyes downfield and steps up to avoid contact. Improved as a senior in keeping his eyes focused downfield when stepping up into the pocket.WEAKNESSES: Does not possess preferred athleticism to escape pressure. He has slow, heavy feet, and is confined to the pocket. Has a tendency to loft deep balls into coverage. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BxtK-eGqviQ I'm looking forward to a possible steal in the 3rd round, what say you?***This was a joke initially but I actually like the kid. Saw him play a few times and he played very well, I'm not exactly sure why there hasn't been much talk on him. Thoughts?
Nice little call out thread you got going here.
Thank God we don't have a 3rd round pick. I'd much prefer to roll with Glennon, and I'm not even a Glennon fan.
I'm intrigued by Mettenberger and have been for a while, but the only lesson to be learned from this is low YPA in college is bad but high YPA isn't necessarily good. Here are some of the notable college QBs from 2010 and where they ranked. 1. Cam Newton 2. Kellen Moore 3. Greg McElroy4. Ryan Mallett5. Scott Tolzien 6. Ryan Lindley9. Andy Dalton 10. Andrew Luck11. Aaron Murray12. Denard Robinson13. Stephen Garcia14. Tyrod Taylor17. Terrelle Pryor19. Colin Kaepernick20. Brandon Weeden21. Kirk Cousins33. Robert Griffin III41. Nick Foles45. Geno Smith46. Matt Barkley65. Ryan Tannehill74. Christian Ponder75. Jake LockerAs you can see there are a lot of non-NFL QBs that rank highly.
Nick Foles Y/A is significantly higher in the NFL than College, RGIII was as well before his injury. Still, according to our stats. Mettenberger is our man, no questions asked.

lol
Nick Foles Y/A is significantly higher in the NFL than College
Correct.
RGIII was as well before his injury.
That was Griffin's sophomore year. As a junior, Griffin was #1 in YPA.
Still, according to our stats. Mettenberger is our man, no questions asked.
I don't think anyone is saying high YPA automatically means you're going to be good but if that's what you want to go with, knock yourself out. And just for the record Mike Glennon was #65 in 2012.

Ooh that last one stings
It does sting, that's why I'm saying let's go with Mettenberger, he's tied for 2nd overall and ahead of others like JFF, Bortles, Teddy, and AJ. The guy gets big chunks of yardage when he throws, isn't that what we want?
bring back Griese!
Go figure the whiner baby would make his own thread to call out one guy he didn't like.Stay classy brother.
Perhaps scheme might have more to do with ypa than said QB....

I like Jdub and his posts a lot actually. If he left, this forum would miss him. The same cannot be said about you. This thread brings up a legitmate concern some of us have been talking about with Glennon. Y/A is very important and if you believe that a guy is what he is, why not go after someone who has a propensity for big chunks?
Perhaps scheme might have more to do with ypa than said QB....
You're exactly right, scheme does matter but deep routes are run on many plays, high Y/A suggest the guy looks for the deeper routes and puts the ball in good position to be caught and run with on shorter routes. Glennon was at about 7.1 in college if I remember correctly. It's not like Mettenberger runs a spread scheme that could inflate his numbers, he runs a pro style offense and still chunks people for yardage. Many experts will tell you Y/A is very important, can anyone tell me why a guy like Zach is a bad idea? I've watched him play, he passes my eye test....

The Bucs should definitely do their due diligence on him.
I wouldnt mind ZM with a late round pick seeing as how he will be coming off of injury and probably wont play at all in 2014. I would also be in favor of the same situation with Aaron Murray.
