USA TodayJeremiah George played his college ball at Iowa State, was drafted by the Jets and played six games last year with the Jaguars, so the former Clearwater High star is thrilled to be continuing his NFL career so close to home with the Bucs."It's exciting," said George, still only 23 years old entering his second NFL season. "I drove home last night and it was like 30 minutes. It's a blessing to be around my family and spend more time. It was such a long commute for them when I was in college. I'm just glad they can be here."George, claimed on Sunday by the Bucs after he was waived by the Jaguars, had a solid preseason with Jacksonville, leading the team with 20 tackles. Last year he attended the Bucs' local predraft workout and had thought he might be picked by the home team before he was picked by the Jets in the fifth round, only to be waived in the team's final cuts last year. He played in six games for the Jaguars as a rookie, totaling six tackles in limited playing time.
USA TodayGeorge, who was the Times' Pinellas County Defensive Player of the Year in 2009, will work as the primary backup to former All-Pro Lavonte David at weakside linebacker, learning from one of the game's best."Lavonte and Danny (Lansanah), those are true professionals, and it's good to be in the same meeting room, to see how they pick up the film, how they correct their own mistakes," said George, who will have his parents, brother and girlfriend in the stands for Sunday's opener at Raymond James Stadium.
