NFL Quarterback Rankings: Jerry Angelo files Glennon under "not good enough" By GurSamuel?@FredTheGur Feb 11 2014, 8:15pmAngelo_Zpsc6B451B1.JpgJonathan Daniel Former Bears GM gives a pessimistic assessment of Mike Glennon, ranks him 28th among 2013 quarterbacksThe dead period between the Super Bowl and the start of free agency is a time not just for looking towards the future, but reflecting on the past. Jerry Angelo, long-time general manager for the Chicago Bears, has chosen to do the latter, and has offered a rating for every QB from the 2013 season - all 61 of them. Angelo's rating - which is for that QB's 2013 performance only, not their total body of work -  ranges from 5.0 to 9.0 (because why not), and is split into eight categories: •8.5 - 9.0 - The upper class quarterbacks. They can elevate the play of their team. Has an extraordinary make-up physically and has intangibles. An elite player.•8.0 - 8.4 - Played at a high level. Was one of the reasons - but not the reason - for his team's success... not elite.•7.5 - 7.9 - Talented, has good history of play, but had a subpar year. Lack of durability, deficiency in an intangible area, poor cast around him or coaching. Any of these reasons may have kept him from playing to his potential. May be a descending player.•7.0 - 7.4 - Solid traits but limited. Can "win with him" but need a good supporting cast and quality coaching. Shown to be a consistent performer, but not a top one.•6.5 - 6.9 - Has strong traits but hasn't done it. Lack of experience, injuries, missing intangible may be the reason for his erratic play. Still a work in progress. He can move up or down.•6.0 - 6.4 - Can start and compete with him with a good supporting cast and quality coaching, but lacks something, i.e., arm talent (strength or accuracy), poise, instincts. Not good enough. To win with him 2 of the 3 of the phases have to be dominate [sic] or surround him with high caliber players.•5.5 - 5.9 - Can be an emergency starter. Does not have the mental make up or physical talent too [sic] perform as a consistent starter. He's temporary relief, but not a long term solution.•5.0 - 5.4 - A band-aid, can get you through a game. Not a starter. he lacks the arm strength or needs accuracy. May be missing something intangible, i.e. toughness, instincts etc... Cannot win with him, regardless of supporting cast or coaching. Angelo gave Mike Glennon a 6.3 rating, a rating he shares with Jake Locker and Ryan Tannehill (though Angelo places the other two quarterbacks above Glennon). For wider context, other QBs in this band are Josh McCown, Kyle Orton, Matt Schaub (all 6.4), Geno Smith (6.2), and E.J. Manuel, Thad Lewis and Terrelle Pryor (all 6.0). Most (but not all) of the starting QBs received specific criticism from Angelo; here's what he had to say about Glennon: He showed good poise and good arm strength. Can see over the rush and can get the ball down field. Those are the pluses. The negatives are he's to [sic] slow and immobile. Will hold onto the ball long after his internal clock should have gone off and struggles to extend a play once it breaks down. His accuracy is average and struggles in the intermediate area of the field. None of Angelo's criticism strike me as particularly unfair - here at Bucs Nation, we've long pointed out his frustrating inconsistency in pulling the trigger with anticipation, and his continuing struggles with ball placement. More worrying, perhaps, is that three of the four positives Angelo identifies in Glennon - arm strength, seeing over the rush and getting the ball downfield - are traits a QB is born with (in this case his natural arm strength and his height). The aspects of QB play that come from skill development - decision making, accuracy and ability to keep a cool head when plays break down - are the areas where Glennon struggles most, at least in Angelo's eyes. While Angelo offers an assessment of every QB, Bucs fans should pay attention to Angelo's article more than most other fan bases. After all, Angelo, who was once the Bucs' director of player personnel, was the only general manager Lovie Smith has ever worked with as a head coach before the Bucs hired him last month. After spending nine seasons building rosters together in Chicago, it'd be fair to speculate that Angelo and Smith have at least some overlap in their views when it comes to player assessment, which lends some added weight to Angelo's opinion on Glennon. Overall, Angelo ranked Glennon 26th among starting QBs from the 2013 season, and 28th among all QBs. Drew Brees and Cam Newton were both given an 8.7 rating by Angelo, and Matt Ryan a 7.9; Angelo's rating system may be somewhat arbitrary, but the gap in quarterback play between the Bucs and the rest of the NFC South is starker than it has been in years.833Fe8Ca-54E0-4E29-8Cc8-F3748289D70B_Zps2793783B.gif http://www.bucsnation.com/2014/2/11/5400654/nfl-quarterback-rankings-jerry-angelo-files-glennon-under-not-good

We all agree with you there. We don't have the coaches to teach skill development. Maybe Tedford can do it but in almost 40 years it hasn't happen yet. It seems of late we have all our eggs riding on a college coach to save us whether Schiano or Tedford. Given the high failure rate I don't have much hope for 2014 but he|| could freeze over!

Jerry Angelo is an idiot but he is right about Glennon. He made a list and rated the QB'S from 5 to 9. Dork.

Gaines Adams was worth a 2nd round pick though.

If the Bucs stay with Glennon, I believe there is a pretty good chance our top priority next season (2015) will be a QB.

I would have put him up one "band".  I'd be tempted to do the same with Schaub, as I don't think he fits the description, but he doesn't fit the "can go up or down" part of the next band.I'd move Glennon up one because a) he can move up or down, and b) I don't think that Angelo was right on some of his negatives, and c) I think he didn't give enough weight to circumstances in others.

Big difference between the 2 though. Schaub will be 33 going into next season.  That is, if he is even on a roster.  Glennon could possibly get better, being as young as he is.  But everyone knows Schaubs ceiling.  I believe Angelo is just rating the 2013 season, if I read that correctly. But going forward, its Glennon hands down.

I would prefer to hear from someone who knows a thing or two about QB development.
