Townsend who was the UF Punter and frankly got shafted by not getting the Ray Guy award was planning on returning to UF. Suddenly Gruden cuts the Raiders punter before the draft at a very odd time like days into taking the job.
At the time, many wondered why he would do this. It appears he did it to prove to Florida kicker Townsend that he would draft him which he did in Rd 5.
Funny how that played out. University of Florida got shanked here because they didn’t recruit a punter and it was way past signing day. And by the looks of their team in the Orange and Blue scrimmage which Townsend participated in, they are not gonna have a complete team and a great punter is going to be important. They also lost their place kicker to Oakland as well although he went undrafted.
Thought it was off that Licht didn’t convince Piniero to come down the road since our current kicker is so so.
