Jason is either hit or miss

I am a Licht fan. I get that first round draft picks is one common metric for judging a GM, but its also a bit misleading because the GM is often times drafting for need (less so in 1st round, admittedly) and the team's circumstances and for what the HC wants.

Mike Evans was probably in their view the BPA IN A POSITION OF NEED and Lovie wanted him (supposedly) and not Manziel becaue "Mike Glennon was the QB of the future" and we had Lovie's beloved vet QB. So, that pick all came together perfectly.

A few years later though we needed a franchise QB and there were two choices.  It was never really a choice though with one form FSU. That selection undermiens the team for a while BUT it was always going to happen.

Bruce Arians really wanted our MLB and it worked early but boy was he WRONG about White's character.

So, it probably all evens out over time BUT Licht's story with the Bucs is as much about drafting guys like Market and bringing in Arians and Brady and even the front office guys like Greenberg.  The Owners probably think of him as a ROH-type steward of the team.

thought Davin Joseph was the best of the three.  Not that pro bowls mean much but he made it twice in his career with the Bucs and was a solid starter for 7 years.  My memory may not be serving me correctly but thought he was half decent. Can certainly talk me into a miss there lol

He was average at best and didn't deserve the Pro Bowl nods (alternate one year and reserve the other) or second contract. Quintessential dude that looked liked Tarzan, played like Jane. He wasn't a good first-round pick. Clayton and Williams flamed out for various reasons, but at least they had one really good season each. Davin Joseph can't even say that.

Davin Jospeh was not great for sure, but he is one of the first PFF whipping boys so that is the underpinning for much of his criticism by people who said there was "no correlation between passing and running in the NFL" and that PFF grades were OBJECTIVE lmao

Jospeh plays during a stretch of terrible Bucs teams, shedding vets from the Dungy/Gruden era and bringing in even older vets under Gruden lmao and firing Gruden

drafted ... 4-12

year 2 .... 9-7 (drafted Gaines Adams, Caddy blows out knee?) Only one Pro Bowler

year 3 . . 9-7 . . He is one of 4 pro bowlers, Gruden fired

year 4 . . 3-13  Youngry

he could have played with Aaron Rodgers

I do think the under-appreciated point is that if you’re constantly picking above 20 in the first - then drafts are much harder to hit.

When you happen to land a GOAT, and you already have some pretty good pieces on the roster - you can focus on drafting the trenches and adding value picks in 3rd - they 5th rounders - and you can really lean into the strength of the various positions of strength.

I like Licht, I think he’s a solid GM, and the best since Ron Wolf for this franchise… but if you aren’t having to draft a QB or OLT in the first round, it sure does help.
