one explanation would be that everyone inside the Bucs truly saw this season as nothing more than a developmental season.
The team has done better than expected in a bad division so they are still sort of in it, but thought before the season was to get the cap in order and see what we have in some of these players, from our MLB to guys like JTS, so that they can decide who to keep and who to move on from.
May be a mis-read, but if you listen to Bowles its one possibility
That "explanation" doesn't really coincide with signing and starting Baker Mayfield. If the people inside OBP "truly saw this season as nothing more than a developmental season," then the QB they used a 2nd-Round pick on a few seasons ago would be the starting QB. This is one problem with being gullible on Coach-Speak.
So at this point his 5th year option will be declined and he plays next year as a contract year, which is a good thing as his production will likely increase but anything he does in 2024 will be fool's gold.
I am not sure he will be that great even in a contract year
This is one problem with being gullible on Coach-Speak.
No coach said that.
And that phrase "coach speak" has not been kind to you
This (that the offense had more problems than just Mayfield) is Bowles and Canales point
Coach-speak tends to fool those simpletons with low football acumen.
LMAO . . Buggsy, you're the North Star of WRONGNESS.
I am not sure he will be that great even in a contract year
Happens all the time. Marcus Jones had 8 sacks his first 4 years then in his contract year looked like Julius Peppers.
No coach said that.
Oh, so it's just your quality analysis? That's why the "explanation" doesn't make any sense. Thanks for the clarification.

my comment was more about his talent level, not how NFL players react to money
His talent level is there to get 10+ sacks in a contract year. Michael Johnson comes to mind. Bucs got tricked on that one too.

I hope you’re right
JTS just isn't good. We all see it. Limited moves. Licht whiffed on him and Hall.
I still say Lloyd was the right pick... I was mocked for it since he started off slow.
He's playing much better this year. Better than anything Hall gave us.
I also said J Johnson was a better pick than Hall. @biggs mocked me on those as well.
Trading back for Hall, JTS, and Trask were such mind numbingly stupid picks for Licht....and as I've said, his best picks fell into his lap and I continue to feel that way.
We could have had Devin Lloyd, Creed Humphrey, and Javon Holland. All of which I was banging the table over...
Instead he drafted for need instead of BPA.
Thank God he nailed it with Yaya
Instead he drafted for need instead of BPA.
Especially in the Brady era because it was “win now”
I also said J Johnson was a better pick than Hall. @biggs mocked me on those as well.
You’ll have to be more specific, here. Some quotes would be helpful as well. I’d love to give your due.
and as I've said, his best picks fell into his lap and I continue to feel that way.
And it continues to be a foolish argument, because Creed Humphrey, Landon Dickerson, Holland, etc. all “fell in his lap too” yet Licht didn’t draft them. He gets credit for the good players he selects while passing on bad players, just like he gets blame for the bad players he selects while passing on good players. See how that works?

I'm not gonna look it up... feel free if you want or deny it... but it happened. Said trading back for Hall was dumb with Johnson Lloyd available.
Holland was a bit of a reach but he graded so well I cannot fathom why we wouldn't want his skill set.
Creed we had 2 shots at...
Evans - lap
Wirfs - 4th OT taken but smart move trade up one spot. Still he fell
Winfield - right in his bread basket. Fell, filled a need
Josh Allen - fell in his lap but he went white (to your point)
Lloyd and Johnson fell into his lap
Humphrey he could have had TWICE but instead opted to pay for Jensen and draft Hainsey. (Does Licht know how the comp pick formula works?)
Breece Hall was there... so many good picks.
I believe he's had a lot of luck in players falling to him and sure... maybe it's a fools argument. But when he has to draft somewhere with ambiguity he whiffs.
He's been here so long so of course he has some wins and I actually like his draft this year.
He's great in UDFA.
He got us a ring and Brady. But he really shit the bed after drafting Winfield and until he drafted Kancey.

I’m guessing it didn’t happen for a variety of reasons, with the main one being Jermaine Johnson (I assume this is who you meant by “J Johnson”) was selected by the Jets right in front of Tampa’s pick. The Bucs didn’t have the opportunity to draft Johnson. Although I would guess his selection is what forced the trade-down. Another reason I’m pretty sure it didn’t happen is because I liked Johnson as a prospect.
RE: Devin Lloyd - I liked him as a prospect too, but using another first round pick on a MLB a couple years after using the #5 overall pick on a MLB isn’t a good use of resources at all. George Karlaftis should have been the pick.
Creed we had 2 shots at...
Again, like Jermaine Johnson above, this isn’t accurate. Tampa Bay had one shot to draft Humphrey, and that was in R1. Humphrey was taken by the Chiefs prior to the Bucs selection in R2.
You can see why I’d like to see the quotes you’re referring to in lieu of relying on your memory.
