I wanted to take a quick lookback at JW's most efficient QBing last year from a 3rd down perspective. Outside of Red Zone play, we utterly dominated the KC Chiefs. 11/16 on 3rd down. 35:18 ToP vs 24:42. 74 plays to 52!!! 442 yards to 343 (less interested in this, but still).

Quick smattering of JW's play on 3rd down in this game. This is what we need going forward. We need this guy to show up for the rest of the season.

3RD & 4 AT TB 31 |05:52
(5:52) (Shotgun) J.Winston pass short right to A.Humphries pushed ob at TB 44 for 13 yards (P.Gaines).

Play: Bunch left w/ Hump tight, Brate slot, Evans wide. Classic "Spacing" concept where Evans and Brate run in cut Curls with Hump Arrow underneath them.

JW immediately reads the successful rub and Hump is well open on the Arrow. Gets the ball out straight-away, on the money.

A 3 yard Arrow route turns into a 9 yard catch and run for 1st down.

3RD & 9 AT TB 45 |04:12
(4:12) (Shotgun) J.Winston pass short right to C.Brate to KC 45 for 10 yards (D.Sorensen).

Play: 4 wide spread w/ Brate tight slot right. JW reads the blitz off the edge, the man coverage, and gets the ball out immediately to Brate right. Ball is well out before he turns on the 10 yard hitch and its right there when he gets his head around. Beautiful. 1st down.

3RD & 5 AT KC 40 |02:46
(2:46) (Shotgun) J.Winston pass short right to R.Shepard to KC 21 for 19 yards (P.Gaines).

Play: Hump and Shep Tight (nearly Stacked) left. Again, blitz/man. Hump is charged with blitz chip and HOLY HELL does he LAY HIS GUY OUT. Decleats him.

Still JW, gets a little pressure, but knows where he is going with the ball immediately. Shep with great inside release and beats his man handily on a 10 yard Dig. Ball on the money. Catch and run. First down.

3RD & 10 AT KC 27 |11:28
(11:28) (Shotgun) J.Winston pass short left to C.Brate to KC 19 for 8 yards (E.Berry).

Play - Here you actually see a little of what we're seeing this year. Brate motions to tight Trips left with Hump just outside of him in the slot. Beautiful combo rub route against Man. Brate gets outside release right on top of Hump's man. Hump runs Delay Slant underneath it and OH MY GOD is he open. We're seeing this same thing this year. 2 steps on defender. This is a trivial 10 yard pitch and catch over the middle to a receiver who has 2 + steps on a trailing man defender (who is still trying to recover from the rub) and a deep safety who is looking over top of ME. If he thrwos here, it is a catch and run for huge yards, easy first down, and he might score from 30 out.

Instead, he goes with Brate on the out who has a defender in his hip pocket. However, he delivers it on time, with accuracy, "throwing him open". The ball is on him right after the stem and its indefensible (defender doesn't even know its there even though he is all over Brate). First down.

Unrelated, in closing. Hump is open...so...friggin often. Oftentimes wide open in space with green to run. His ability to consistently get open underneath just pops off the tape every game you watch. Great route runner, great lateral agility and short area acceleration. Sure hands. I'm not exaggerating when I say that if we featured him, he could be productive like the great slot receivers in this league (Patriots dudes, Landry, et al). This kid is easily one of the most underrated, underappreciated players in the league. He needs to be resigned.
