NFL Rumors: Tampa Bay Buccaneers may cut Carl NicksBy Josh Hill - Feb 17th, 2014 at 10:29 amNicks_Zps2454Ebca.jpgSep 23, 2012; Arlington, TXTampa Bay Buccaneers guard Carl Nicks (77) on the line of scrimmage during the fourth quarter against the Dallas Cowboys at Cowboys Stadium. The Cowboys beat the Buccaneers 16-10. Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports The NFL offseason is upon us, which means that players and teams are starting to look at what 2014 will hold for them. Some players are getting ready to make a run at a Super Bowl, while others are starting to look for new teams to play for. One player who could be out of a job is former Pro Bowler Carl Nicks, who could end up being a cap casualty with the Buccaneers. Jason LaCanfora from CBS Sports notes that the Buccaneers could save some serious cash but sending Nicks packing this offseason. Given his issues with MRSA last season, and what could be a reshaped OL, might the Bucs save $7M in real money and cap space, by letting him go? Wouldn’t be a shocker. It’s not a lock that the Bucs will be revamping their offensive line, but there’s a good chance that if someone has to be cut that it’s going to be Nicks. He’s been a bust for Tampa Bay since singing a huge contract in 2012, and although some of that can be attributed to the MRSA infected Buccaneers locker room, the team may move on with a younger line. http://fansided.com/2014/02/17/nfl-rumors-tampa-bay-buccaneers-cut-carl-nicks/?utm_source=FanSided&utm_medium=Network&utm_campaign=Trending%20on%20FS#!wiW4A

I think the cap space would only be $2.2 mill and also result in $7 mil in dead money (according to overthecap.com). So unless Nicks retires, I think the Bucs give him another shot.

If you "give him another shot" and he re-injures his toe in OTA, mini-camp, weight room, etc then the Bucs owe him his $7M base salary.

I think based on cap space, if he's got a shot at playing, we give him that shot.

I'm not saying I'm either for or against this scenario, but if LaCanfpra is reporting it, there's a better chance of us signing Larry Brackins to take VJax's job.

And if you cut him before the season you save a whopping $2.286 mil and still carry a $7.296 cap hit.

And $7M cash. This is not monopoly money or just a number on Madden. We're talking about real money here.

Dead money means it has been paid out already. So who cares? If you can replace Nicks for a guard making less than $2 mil per year, that is healthy, you pull the trigger.

I don't see us cutting Nicks this year, at least not for a $2m savings. If Nicks opts to retire, then we can cut a deal on his contract. Cutting him makes no sense unless the cap savings is a lot more.

Why is this so hard to understand? His 2014 $7M base salary has not been paid out and doesn't have to be.

Why is this so hard for you to get.  Why does it matter to you if we pay Nicks $7 mil or have it as dead cap money?

Because it's a substantial amount of money the franchise could put to better use.

$7 mil is already paid out.  If he becomes a vested veteran if he is on the roster by the first snap of the regular season the remainder also become guaranteed.Which is better?Nicks may or may not play but you are stuck paying him $9 mil this year orEating $7 mil and using the $2 mil saved to bring in his replacement that is healthy.Nicks would have to be put on IR before the start of the season or else he becomes a vested veteran.

Its February 18th, are we anywhere close to the Week 1 roster? No, the $7M has not been paid out. Anyone who thinks a new $7M in cash should be invested into Carl Nicks is out of their minds.

Its $9mil to keep him.  Its $7mil to cut him.  We would only save $2mil.  Do I need to put it in crayon for you?
