Dead money means it has been paid out already. So who cares? If you can replace Nicks for a guard making less than $2 mil per year, that is healthy, you pull the trigger.

Why is this so hard to understand? His 2014 $7M base salary has not been paid out and doesn't have to be.

$7 mil is already paid out.  If he becomes a vested veteran if he is on the roster by the first snap of the regular season the remainder also become guaranteed.Which is better?Nicks may or may not play but you are stuck paying him $9 mil this year orEating $7 mil and using the $2 mil saved to bring in his replacement that is healthy.Nicks would have to be put on IR before the start of the season or else he becomes a vested veteran.

Its February 18th, are we anywhere close to the Week 1 roster? No, the $7M has not been paid out. Anyone who thinks a new $7M in cash should be invested into Carl Nicks is out of their minds.

There is no way to recoup the $7 mil.  That is why it is referred to as dead money.  Dominik screwed up the Nicks contract and restructure big time. The only money that can be recovered is the additional $2 mil.If you cant replace Nicks for less than $2 mil then you just cross your fingers that Nicks can play.  My instincts tell me the Bucs do so given we are talking the guard position.

Its $9mil to keep him.  Its $7mil to cut him.  We would only save $2mil.  Do I need to put it in crayon for you?

In terms of the cap, yes, but he's talking about the actual cash the Glazers have to pay

Unless he is a Glazer...why does it matter?  Its a $2 mil roll of the dice for possibly the best G in the league.  Better yet, its a roll of the dice with someone else's money.

Thank you, Bradentonian. I'm sure it matters to the Glazers. I think they've shown they are willing to spend money the last few years, but they want a return on investment. I suspect that was a big part of why Dom got canned. If you follow Louis Riddick (ex-pro personnel guy) on twitter, he talks about this stuff a fair amount.

I'd also imagine it's down to probability - if they don't think there is good chance for Nicks to actually play next year, they aren't likely to get themselves into a position to have to pay him $7 million.

Glazers would make more if their team wins and doesn't look dreadful.Seriously...if Nicks is considered  not to be an asset to Licht and Lovie yes cutting him is the best move they can make. The Glazers don't interfere with football decision as that isn't their MO most of the time.

Why is it so hard to understand that $6M of $7M of Nicks salary is guaranteed for injury?

I take it back - forgot that the guarantee is already embedded in his deal.

It is also a roster spot.  Besides the money (whatever the exact number is) if the dude isn't likely to be able to play do we want him taking the roster spot?  It won't matter much in camp (unless he gets hurt), but moving into the season we need all hands on deck.

Camp will be important for Nicks both in regards to us as a player and to himself.  In all honesty, I think he is probably done.  If we find out in camp this is true, it likely wont be a surprise to him either and we can come to a settlement for him to retire.  If he reaches a settlement to retire, he will get paid but it wont affect our cap.  Win-win situation.

It's not necessarily about the Glazers direct involvement in the football decisions; it's doing things to please the Glazers. And there are really only three ways to do that: win; don't overpay for players; don't sign players who are going to show up on a police blotter.

I am still holding out hope he is 100% healthy for training camp.  If not, maybe they work out an injury settlement.  Then we can chalk it up to terribly bad luck, and move on.

The money is secondary to the roster spot at this point. Regardless, it's incumbent on the team's medical staff to make the right assessment here.Let's not forget how dominant this guy was and how bad we played without him.

The money isnt secondary if he opts to retire with a settlement.  Plus, its not like his roster spot is holding up another quality starter from being on the team...he is there instead of a practice squad guy who MIGHT get to see some special teams work.

We'll cut him and he'll go back to New Orleans and go to the Pro Bowl this season.
