The Bucs pass rush is better this year over 2023? The Bucs have better pass defense in 2024?
They generated 48 sacks in 2023 and are currently at 44 sacks with one game to go. But, the Bucs blitz rate in 2023 was nearly 41% and this year it shows at only 33.5% blitzing so far
The Bucs are also UP substantially in QB pressures with 160 iso far in 2024 versus only 130 in 2023
Unless they gave up 500 yard or so against the Saints the Bucs will also end up substantially improving on Air Yards and YAC, year over year?
The only difference is scoring, 7th in 2023 and currently 16th in 2024
We all view the current season in relation to the past. That usually works well except when there are changes in the style of play.
the Bucs definitely need better edge rushing but double digit sacks are down across the league, most likely from the growth of short, quick passing game
“So the NFL had 22 double-digit pass rushers last season.
That number has been cut in half this season with one game remaining “
Interesting info. Hadn’t read this yet.
Hard to believe that we’re so close to last years sack total, certainly hasn’t felt that way.
Also curious that despite the reported trend, so many “good” QB’s have passing yards rivaling the “elite” QB’s. I’d say that it’s likely hard for the media to make a legit case for the same names for the MVP…but then I remember how they influenced pro-bowl voting.
The only thing I appreciate about this is: it helps put a really big chip on some of those “good” QB’s being ignored right now.
Glad to have shaq back! He will have a full off season & be back 100% next year

Statistically the defense is not that far off from last year's even with the revolving clown house DB situation
The two games vs the Falcons pretty much skewed the defensive stats for the season. And two other stinkers vs the Broncos and Ravens.

True and of those the Falcons losses are the truly bad ones, because of the impact on the playoff race but also because the Falcons are not that great. The Ravens are a legit team and, at least at the time, the Broncos were catching people off guard.
man, that first Falcons game was so difficult to watch and we were still in. Obviously, our defense was completely on skates and I think our fourth quarter offense was field goal, fumble and punt. On the punt I think we went backward close to 30 yards

The 2024 defense is very likely to end up BETTER (statistically speaking) than our 2020 Super Bowl winning defense.
That 2020 regular season defense was roughly equivalent to 5500 yds at 330 yds per game and 22 points per game
This 2024 regular season defense should end up somewhere near 5800 yds at 341 yds per game and 21 points per game
And here are the added points:
that 2020 Super Bowl winning defense didn't magically get hot in the playoffs. It actually underperformed its regular season averages UNTIL the Super Bowl
And the 2020 offense generated the same scoring average in the playoffs as the 2024 offenses regular season average.
This is one reason I said that Coen might stay.
The team is very close. To illustrate how close, if we had one of our ends as a double digit sacker, the Bucs defense would be one of the top 3 or 4 pressure defenses in the league
if the lowly 2024 Buccaneers just split with the Falcons - we are in both games and that is the norm -- we finish with 10 or 11 wins. Instead, we could get knocked out of the playoffs.
We lost to theC hiefs and 49ers by 6 and 3, respectively. Win one of those and we may be 12 wins. Instead, we could get knocked out of the playoffs.
