Glennon stinks. He's a career backup at best and a waste of a third-round pick. Dumb Dominick and Schiano took Glennon over Keenan Allen, Terrance Williams, Marcus Wheaton and Jordan Reed. We wouldn't need to get a receiver or tight end if he had taken one of them. As the years go by Dominick's drafts are going to look worse and worse.
New rookie salaries suggest teams don't feel forced to start players because they are making obscene amount of money in the top ten.
Agree...the money makes it easier to sit a 1st rounder than in the past, but where our team stands right now...we need our 1st/2nd round picks to be on the field if not more. Drafting your backups early is a luxury we dont have right now.
Theoretically it makes it easier - the reality is that every single first round QB taken under the new rookie rules has started from day 1.
Still doesn't mean we would have to do it too. I think a lot of teams make a big mistake starting guys too soon.
Hi Guys, Don't post much, but I thought this was interesting. Don't hammer me on it too bad if you don't agree. Just a thought.I kind of feel like Licht has tipped his hand on the first round pick. In the article, which I referenced below, while speaking about Glennon:" Licht said. "He'll get every chance to be the starter." At the same time, he noted that "you can't have too many good quarterbacks" and that they "want competition for Mike [Glennon]."This tells me that the possibility of the Bucs taking a first round QB is out. In our current position, with many needs, you don't draft a QB in the first round if you are going to throw him into a QB competition. You only draft a guy you think is ready to start. I know Lovie has been quoted as saying that there will be a quarterback left worthy of the 7th pick... I think that is smoke and he is just trying to tempt somebody to trade up later during the draft. With all this being said, I think we can look forward to drafting a QB in the 2nd or 4th round, while also adding another veteran. All this barring that we don't trade down and add another pick in the 3rd round. And we can all stop speculating about the Bucs taking Johnny Manziel or Blake bortles or Teddy... We need to start thinking more Garrapollo, McCarron, Carr....Not saying I agree or disagree... Just a thought for everyone. The article link is below if you wanna read. http://www.bucsnation.com/2014/2/26/5449618/buccaneers-are-very-happy-with-mike-glennon
Or this could be a clever smokescreen by our new GM. If the Bucs are going to take a QB, it's going to be Derek Carr if the the top 3 are gone. And, yes I could see them picking him at #7. Carr will will be gone long before the Bucs pick in the 2nd round. My thinking is are you going to take the guy you want at 7 or do you settle for a AJ McCarron, Zach Mettenberger or Jimmy Garopolo in the 2nd?

is carr really the guy you want? odd to me that he would be the top QB on our board...or that 4 QBs would have such high grades. while fans think that every QB coming out this year must be HOF bound, i dont know if the pros fall for that. these guys are also scouting winston, mariota, hundley and the rest im sure. i dont see the Bucs reaching for a QB just to take one.

I could see them doing their due diligence on a proposed franchise LT this year, and if Glennon/vet qb fails this year, setting themselves up to acquire winston, mariota, hundley, etc next year.

I agree somewhat - it just seems like it's gone out of fashion. Coaches/GMs/fans don't have patience. I also think that nobody really believes that a QB is "ruined" by first year failure anymore, and if it's just losses, well - what's the alternative? The guy they don't see as a the starter, or the guy who isn't quite ready? Plus, the low-cost works both ways - makes it easier to dump these guys faster. The sooner you figure out what you've got - good or bad, the better.
I wouldn't be surprised at anything JL will do.... because frankly, I don't have a freakin' clue how the guy operates.I see a QB in our draft... just don't know how they're going to get one.

Personally I like Bridgewater and Bortles at #7 if either are there. What I'm saying is that if the Bucs truly want Carr if the top 3 are gone then they are going to have to reach and take him at #7. Derek Carr might not make it past the Vikings. JMO

I think this is a bad assumption. With Mark Dominik, I believe you would be right in your assumption, but with Licht I think we are going to see a return to more tried and true strategies. Up until recently it has been very rare for a rookie QB to start. IMO unless you have the no.1 pick and Andrew Luck is sitting there you should never ever be drafting a QB with the plan to start him. THAT is where Licht can take this team to new levels. He is going to bring in players and the best players will start. He isnt going to plan on Bowers developing in the offseason and becoming a double digit sack guy. You bring in more talent than you need and let the cream rise to the top. That was the issue with Dominik. He had plans for these draftees. There can be no plan. All there can be is competition and the best man wins. If you have to cut or trade away your second round pick you do it when it becomes obvious. You dont plug him in as a starter a la Benn and throw away an entire year and then decide to trade him the next year. You dont have 5 years to develop a guy. If he isnt taking to the coaching or the scheme you have to cut bait.I got a little bit off track there. But yeah, I dont think we will be drafting any players that we will be planning to start on this football team. If they earn that right then so be it, but if they dont have to earn it they will never appreciate it. I am really excited to have a very strong personnel man at the top of this organisation right now. I think that the Glazers have done a spectacular job in selecting someone with a strong personnel background. That is the only way we were ever going to stop the perpetual rebuild of Mark Dominik.
