Not really surprising
“
We need to get some more players and depth in certain spots. It’s just the cycle we’re in that we had to focus last year on offense. You know, not everything is, ‘You can put it on the [head] coach,'” Licht said.
“And, I mean, you guys [at JoeBucsFan] talk about The Lost Decade all the time. We’ve been going to the playoffs for five straight years now and Todd’s been here the whole time. But he’s been the head coach for three of those years. … I mean, I guess there’s expectation to win the Super Bowl every year, but I think Todd’s been doing a great job steadying the ship and pulling us out of some ruts [in 2022 and 2023] and keeping the faith and keeping guys positive, and we’ve done some great things …
“You never know what you’re going to get with a head coach and we know what we have with Todd. And we’re going to do whatever we can to help improve the team for him.”
Licht didn't fire him so I'd expect he'd say exactly this to rationalize that poor decision.
There is no question that draft pick misses and injuries impacted the team's performance this past season, especially on defense. What Licht fails to note is all the other issues with the head coach, particularly the game management issues we've discussed ad nauseum here in the RB. Failing to acknowledge those issues means to me the FO doesn't regard those issues as important to address and correct. Or just keeping them "in house" LOL.

I heard they hired a coach to be Bowles' game manager.
Bowles, as shitty as he is, is a top 5 Bucs head coach of all time. Licht has a point when you consider the bar of the franchise.
if we were the Ravens or Eagles, it be a different story

Yup.

He needs it badly. Definitely a step in the right direction.
Bowles gets shit from the fans while Licht gets stroked and it's wrong. 16th in points allowed is actually over performing considering the defensive players on the roster. Defense gets a great goal line stand up 4 in the 4th qtr of a playoff game, the offense then immediately fumbles and every goober wants Bowles fired. His regular season record in December/January is 13-4 excluding the 2022 Falcons game when starters were benched. 13-4!
Speaking of game management, maybe if Duuuuuuuuuuvvvaaaaalllll's offense didn't shit the bed in the 4th qtr we would have went on a real run. He was the real game management problem. Hey we're averaging 7 yards a carry vs the #30 run defense and it's 3rd and 1, let's go empty!

I think Licht was just answering the question presented so I don’t think it was even on his radar.
earlier Bowles suggested there efforts to find someone to help with clock mgmt go back two seasons. I think the Bucs are one of a minority of teams who do not have a dedicated clock mgmt person

Yup.
ah . . "GM speak," you might say?
LOL
Not that it matters, but you guys are the ones actually offering the rationalization, right? Basic human nature.
When an AUTHORITY FIGURE's comment contradicts a belief out comes the claim that the comment is NOT genuine because the authority figure had an ulterior motive ("I'd expect he'd say exactly this to rationalize that poor decision").
Necessary (and convenient) to protect the belief from the contradiction
"coach speak"
"Player speak"
"GM speak"
The problem is that Licht's comments MESH with what most see with their eyes . . a defense that is "next up" on the rebuild and then further decimated by injury.
Thats NOT an "excuse" for Bowles BECAUSE YOU CAN STILL BE A BAD HC even if you have limited talent and injuries, but Licht is describing observed REALITY . . Dean goes down, in comes . . . Hayes . . TD for the Commanders.
Licht is describing observed REALITY (the the defense needs talent)
SR's Battle Plan - "focus on rebuilding the defense and accomplish that with five re-signings on that side of the ball, five new defensive free agents and six defensive draft picks."
Josh Q's battle plan - "priorities this offseason . . .Infuse the defense with talent at every level and at both the top and bottom of the roster. . . .Flood the inside linebacker room."
Licht didn't fire him so I'd expect he'd say exactly this to rationalize that poor decision.
lol
Not sure what's funny about it. Did you expect Licht to say Bowles sucks and he made the wrong decision keeping him?
It's always coach/gm speak.
So Licht is lying when he says the defense is the next part of the rebuild? The Bucs are going heavy offense this offseason?
:-)

I’m honestly shocked JL didn’t talk about Todd’s penchant for being aggressive when it matters, taking accountability vs. constantly blaming players, playing to the strengths of his team and players, and being one of the more astute situational/game clock managers in the league.

again . . I ask . .

It is weird how the mind works, right?
As I said up above it does not follow, logically speaking, that a coach with limited player talent and depth is a GOOD head coach and here you ("penchant for being aggressive . . . ") and Fire ("Bowles sucks") are making that point right along with me . . .
But neither of you want to say Licht is LYING when he said the defense is the next part of the rebuild? In other words, neither of you want to acknowledge that Licht was SPEAKING THE TRUTH?
SR seems to agree with Licht. Josh Q seems to agree Licht. Both liars too? GM speak and . . well . . PR. . . speak?
:-)
