I just don't think about Licht or Bowles in binary. My assessment of them evolves and continues to evolve.
Licht:
Started off poorly and getting Brady I'd say saved him here as he was also given EXTRA time to get things right and he delivered as such... He found some gems both early and late in the draft. Trading for JPP was a huge win..letting McCoy go was smart. Finding Barrett was amazing. He landed a HOF LT (that in my opinion fell into his lap but he still made the trade up to secure). Winfield, Godwin, Vea, and Evans. But then he does awful draft picks and he arguably has the worst pick in franchise history in Aguayo. So he's literally been above average of a GM but he was afforded a looooong runway and Brady. Lately I haven't been as happy with him lately. Can't find a pass rush, keeping Bowles, and if I go back far enough to Devin White there's plenty to be annoyed with... He gets to fall on the Bowles sword if this doesn't work out but he's afforded that decision making having won 3 straight division chips on borrowed money.
Bowles on the other hand I think of 2 ways... The defensive coordinator and head coach.
We know he threw an absolute gem of a shut out on the super bowl run. He had another good season then called a zero blitz and ended our season when everyone knows Stafford loves the zero blitz. He's won three straight division chips which is definitely worth something but he's also done it playing 500 football against the worst division in football. He's had a good offense for 2 of the 3 years. His play calling is pretty shitty and we've beaten that horse to death but I do agree there is somewhat of a pass based on the talent and whiffs from Licht in the draft...but as a head coach he's one of the worst in the league DURING THE GAMES. He might be fine with keeping the locker room but during the game he's borderline brain dead.
So as it stands Licht has earned a pass but he's on thin ice with me taking Bowles over Coen and with his whiffs in the draft and FA lately.
Bowles gets a tiny pass based on the talent but I'm not buying any of these "16th it points scored" bs. We played some of the worst offenses in the league down the stretch and the good teams we played early weren't exactly offensive juggernauts. Letting Atlanta go for 900 yards in 2 games is inexcusable. But overall he's not getting the most out of the limited talent... He's playing super soft defense and not getting off the field or forcing turnovers. Which is what made Coen's offense that much more impressive.
Context
Im gonna keep saying it that zero blitz is an arians call(watch season with the az cardnials on amazon), when have you seen bowles zero blitz like he did with the rams the last 3 years
Honestly the defense did pretty good for how deep for depth we needed to go to on every level. front 4 of diaby, kancey, vea, tryon mlb- LVD Britt secondary- whitehead/awj/merriweather CB- dean/mccollum/smith/hayes/izien
very underwhelming we need more talent and less mistakes and the mistakes are quite noticeable.
900 yards on soft zone was terrible though jesus i cant believe we let cousin torch us like that
Licht didn't fire him so I'd expect he'd say exactly this to rationalize that poor decision.
I’m honestly shocked JL didn’t talk about Todd’s penchant for being aggressive when it matters, taking accountability vs. constantly blaming players, playing to the strengths of his team and players, and being one of the more astute situational/game clock managers in the league.
again . . I ask . .
So Licht is lying when he says the defense is the next part of the rebuild? The Bucs are going heavy offense this offseason
It is weird how the mind works, right?
As I said up above it does not follow, logically speaking, that a coach with limited player talent and depth is a GOOD head coach and here you ("penchant for being aggressive . . . ") and Fire ("Bowles sucks") are making that point right along with me . . .
But neither of you want to say Licht is LYING when he said the defense is the next part of the rebuild? In other words, neither of you want to acknowledge that Licht was SPEAKING THE TRUTH?
SR seems to agree with Licht. Josh Q seems to agree Licht. Both liars too? GM speak and . . well . . PR. . . speak?
:-)

Clearly the Bucs will emphasize defense in the next few months.
Now, without the typical deflection or fence sitting; is Bowles a good head coach?
A simple yes or no.
I just don't think about Licht or Bowles in binary. My assessment of them evolves and continues to evolve.
as it should and I agree.
not buying any of these "16th it points scored" bs.
C'mon man . ."the only stat that matters" . . . except when it doesnt? ;-)
and . . at llast and at least . . . a "sort of" response on Licht's point. . .
But overall he's not getting the most out of the limited talent
Bowles is the perfect message board Head Coach topic because, like nearly every coach in the NFL, he is a mixture of good and bad AND a mixture of skill AND CIRCUMSTANCES.
But many fans are NOT "BINARY," to use your word. They are BLACK or WHITE (Bowles is either a good coach or a bad coach). That is the FLAW that Licht speaks to DIRECTLY
"You know, not everything is, ‘You can put it on the [head] coach,'” Licht said."
And Licht even addresses the reality that keeps teams from changing coaches like underwear . . a reality that has made some of the LOUDEST "fire Bowles" voices wrong for multiple offseasons:
"You never know what you’re going to get with a head coach and we know what we have with Todd. And we’re going to do whatever we can to help improve the team for him"
The team is run by the GM who has on multiple o opportunities mentioned the FINANCIAL CIRCUMSTANCES of the team and TWICE RECENTLY mentioned that they started the rebuild with the offense . . . . something ANYONE could see impact the team this season.
Seeing is one thing though. Acknowledging an pother . . entirely. . . because . . head coaches are either "good" or "bad"
is Bowles a good head coach?
A simple yes or no.
right on cue ^^ black or white
DH, what you (self-servingly) describe as "fence sitting" is reality and reasonableness. The kind of reality/reasonableness that says IN THE PRESEASON "that White is pretty good but MY EYES TELL ME he sure doesn't seem to run the way the coaches want . . that Bucky guy though . ."
You seem to want two buckets and two buckets only . . . that would be more "week 13 . . White is still RB1" lol
Kidding aside, Bowles is an OKAY coach who is capable of getting the Bucs to a SB and winning . . . with better talent.
The FRUSTRATING defense we saw last season was a REACTION to the gaps in talent.
Bowles didn't drop Diaby into coverage because he thinks Diaby is great at coverage (any more than he did so with Barrett or JPP when we won it all). He dropped Diaby into coverage TOO OFTEN to compensate for lack of pressure.
Josh Hayes is not Jamel Dean . . .Jamel Dean is good but oft injured.
White is a good BUT FLAWED runner who is more valuable to the team then his flawed running
Not much is actually black or white

Is Bowles a good head coach. Yes or no?
No. I wouldn't even put him in the top 15 of current NFL head coaches. Dude never should have gotten the Bucs job but their hands were tied at the time.
and if he didnt get fired after the 2022 let down, things have only been up from there in 2023 and 2024 and with no expectations to boot. There was little chance of that happening. Now, there are some expectations and if the Bucs dont neglect the defense and add the talent needed, Bowles seat will be hot. 2025 season is a make or break year. 2026 is the last year of his contract and they will either extend him or fire him after this season.
A playoff miss or first round exit and he is likely gone. But if he wins a playoff game this year....oh boy...have i told you about this statue?

We’ll agree to disagree on this one, bud.
But if he wins a playoff game this year....oh boy...have i told you about this statue?
Yes, we’re all too familiar with your penchant to eagerly drop to your knees and deepthroat mediocrity.

Are you two trying to say this stuff isn't newsworthy and definitely not thread worthy. I would guess most of the non-lunatics on this board would agree with that.
definitely not thread worthy.
yeah . . because the threads here are SOOOOOOOO important that NO ONE --- not even the biggest faux internet bully -- would ever desecrate them . . like . . well . . ya know, this guy:
We’ll see who starts and gets more carries on Sunday. And the week after that. And the week after that. And the week after that. And the week after that.
Imagine keeping that LIE hidden WHILE TROLLING FOR FORTY PAGES . . almost an entire season.
I mean, who would do such a thing? when the threads are so "worthy."
Ya know who?
THE SAME TROLL (BIGGS3535) who STILL cant admit to it . . even when its IN PRINT

agreed
Like a broken watch the "fire Bowles" crowd will eventually be right!
