I think most NFL teams build their draft boards by marrying the two concepts, ranking best players in positions of need
In a shock to absolutely nobody, you would be wrong.
The leak of the Cowboys draft board shows the exact opposite, which is how the vast majority of the teams build their boards. Those with a clue will notice the Cowboys didn't stick with their board when it came time to pick, passing on Lewis Cine (ranked 13th on their board) to select their 16th ranked player in Tyler Smith. They went with need over who they had as BPA on their board.
Shamelessly clueless. String-post away, nutbag.

CBS mock has us taking Chop and passing on Latue

Goedeke struggled at guard, and thrived last season at RT. So your play is to undue what works? Keep playing Madden; that is one delusional take
Goedeke wasn't able to play any position early in his rookie season. He just wasn't ready to play in the NFL. If you think a player with his frame, skill set and strength can play on the edge but not kick inside you just don't know what you're talking about.
The Bucs would be stupid to draft a WR early in this year's draft
Th Red Board's football smart set is talking about moving up to #13 to draft an LT to play RT, so . . .
:-)
Hypothetically, there couldn't be a tackle good enough to take at 13 and move Goedeke inside?
Hypothetically? Of course there could be. And, most likely there is.
That being said, we'd have to move up quite a bit to get within striking reach of one. And, it would cost us a Day 2 pick.
For a team that has as many holes as we do, RT isn't one of them. Especially one that has already proven to be dogshit at guard. And, it would be foolish to burn a premium pick to move up for one.
We have the worst starting center in the league, and piss-poor play from both guard spots. We have an immediate need at EDGE (which is far superior in relation to positional importance).
I explained how hitting on elite tackle not only upgrades RT but fixes the guard problem. It's almost like you guys cannot read.

That’s not always the case. And, you know that.
And, again, Goedeke moves back to his natural position. And, like magic, he plays well.
Its almost like you can’t use your eyes.

A few things:
1. I'm a BPA guy, so I'm not opposed to drafting Fashanu depending who else is on the board.
2. I'm not in favor of giving up a Day 2 pick to move up into the 'teens to get Fashanu.
3. It's not a lock Goedeke will be an "A" OG. However, I do agree that he could make the move to OG and perform better than he did as a rookie.
With the 3rd round pick for Davis, who is the Bucs most likely 1st round move up target?
And how far does the 3rd for Davis get them?

My guess is Latu or Verse.
I’ve seen Verse as late as #26 and as early as #8.
Latu anywhere from #15 to #28.
I don’t think Verse is in striking range, but Latu might be.
Either way, if it were up to me, I’m hoping there are 4 QB’s off the board at #26 and someone comes calling to trade up.
Net an extra 3rd (or possibly 2nd) and have 5 picks in the Top-96.
You can get EDGE, IOL (multiple), CB, and WR in that range and have good players.
I think jury’s still out on JJ, still could go to a desperate team in 1st round. Think the rest fall to 2nd round.
Latu’s neck fusion surgery, and his doctor recommending he medically retire - may cause him to fall. He’s still a risk, but his upside would be way too good to pass at #26.
Chop Robinson’s lack of production has to be a concern - as Bowles said the tape would direct them to the combine performance, not the other way ‘round.
Almost seems like the Bucs are angling for a trade down… but it really does depend on when & how many QB’s/WR’s get taken in the first round and who’s left at the bottom of the 1st round, as to who might be willing to trade with us.
I’d be great with Latu if he’s there.
Looking at our needs, the biggest would have to be OC/OG, Edge, ILB, WR3, RB2, and CB3.
As fellow posters have pointed out, switching to more of a zone defense means CB3 can be a lesser priority. There are also no ILBs or RBs worthy of the #26 pick, so that leaves OC/OG, Edge, and WR3.
OC/OG would likely be a day 1 starter and have an immediate impact on the team, especially in the run game. The 2 main targets here are Graham Barton and Jackson Powers-Johnson. While Jackson Powers-Johnson might be the better center, I prefer Barton's position flexibility, as he could play either OG spot, OC, and even fill in at OT in a pinch. I really think he would be the best and most realistic pick at 26.
Edge rushers typically take longer to make an impact, aside from the few game changers that are usually drafted in the top 5. If a guy like Jared Verse or Laiatu Latu drops to us at #26, they would be hard to pass up. Latu's injury history worries me, but injury is always a risk in the NFL.
The only WR I'd pull the trigger on at #26 is Brian Johnson Jr.
I think my board at #26 would be ranked in this order: 1) Jared Verse, 2) Graham Barton, 3) Jackson Powers-Johnson, 4) Laiatu Latu, 5) Brian Johnson Jr. If all 5 are off the board, I would be looking to trade down 5-10 spots and land a late 2nd or high 3rd.
I think with our current top 4 picks, we must come away with an Edge rusher, OC/OG, ILB, and either WR3/CB3/OG.
I believe round 4 is the sweet spot for a RB or TE, and round 6 is the spot to take a chance on a raw Edge rusher or OL.
I have 2 different versions of my dream draft depending on which order we choose.
Option A:
rd 1: Edge Jared Verse
rd 2: OC Zach Frazier (might require a trade up using a 3rd or 4th)
rd 3a: WR Devontez Walker or WR Javon Baker
rd 3b: ILB Jeremiah Trotter Jr.
rd 4: RB Braelon Allen, RB Ray Davis, RB Audric Estine
rd 6: TE AJ Barner
rd 7: Edge Sundiata Anderson
Option B:
rd 1: OC Graham Barton
rd 2: ILB Payton Wilson
rd 3a: Edge Marshawn Kneeland
rd 3b: WR Devontez Walker or WR Javon Baker
rd 4: RB Braelon Allen, RB Ray Davis, RB Audric Estine
rd 6: TE AJ Barner
rd 7: Edge Sundiata Anderson
JC-
i understand your reasoning; and even agree with you Goedeke would likely be better there than his rookie season. But the reason I referred playing Madden with this scenario is although it’s “possible”, it’s not going to happen and we all know it so why are you wasting the boards time discussing it.
CB and WR are outside possibilities. But we aren’t taking a safety, d-lineman, or tackle with that first pick.
While Jackson Powers-Johnson might be the better center, I prefer Barton's position flexibility, as he could play either OG spot, OC, and even fill in at OT in a pinch. I really think he would be the best and most realistic pick at 26.
I think I may be leaning towards Barton as well. But I won't be disappointed if JPJ is the pick.
Really good post overall.
