Don't know much about him....thoughts?I guess the GM isn't TOO important since Lovie will have final say, but would still like a good talent evaluator for the draft. http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/writer/jason-la-canfora/24410826/lionel-vital-frontrunner-for-general-manager-position-with-bucs
It's very important. From what I can gather, Lovie isn't wearing two hats, like Jimmy Johnson, Mike Shanahan, or Mike Sherman, he's just not going to have players he doesn't want forced upon him. He's going to need a sharp guy who he can trust - and hopefully it is somebody who is persuasive and can back Lovie down from any dumb ideas he might get. I think it's very hard to evaluate personnel guys because we really don't know how much of their input affected the decision-making at other clubs. There's a tendency for them to get credit for all the good picks/FAs, no blame for the picks/FA busts. But Vital certainly has a great amount of experience with respected front offices. I read from one of the smarter football observers I follow on twitter that losing Vital will hurt Dimitrof more than losing Les Snead (now the Ram's GM) or Dave Caldwell (Jags GM) would.
Lovie has final say on 53 man roster, not necessarily who specifically gets drafted and contracts to free agents. I live in Atlanta and the smart fans are pissed we might take Vital, thats about all I need to know to want him.
Is this the same guy that thought acquiring Steven Jackson was the final piece to the puzzle?
We've heard alot about how good Vital is at evaluating personnel and how good of a coach Lovie is but I sure hope we have a capologist in the building. I would hate for us to turn into the Redskins...

Mike Greenberg

We do. His name is Mike Greenberg - the same guy that did all of the contracts for Mark.

So how did we turn into the Redskins? We would be over the cap if we were paying the average QB salary.

Good. I'm glad they kept that guy.
I like LV, but like the op said, he's pretty much going to be a yes-man to lovie.I'm sure he will have input, and that's good, but lovie is the head honcho, and no one outranks him except the glazers. So, if lovie wants one particular player, he will get him.

I think "yes-man" assumes a lot about Lovie Smith that may or may not be true.

I think some of you are severely underestimating what the GM can do, and what "final say" means. Lovie is not going to break down film on 500 prospects. He's not going to stack the board. He's going to break ties, and he might overrule the consensus of others.

Yea, there are a few. I crossfit with a couple of former players that keep up to speed on whats going on with the franchise.

Well, I can assume lovie values his opinion. Especially if HE is bringing him in. Right? But that doesn't mean he can go over lovie's head at any point or time.I mean, they could very well be at odds about a plethora of issues. OL, revis, drafting qb or de..etc. but if lovie says that's it, all lv can do is whip out the checkbook. Just saying.
