I like LV, but like the op said, he's pretty much going to be a yes-man to lovie.I'm sure he will have input, and that's good, but lovie is the head honcho, and no one outranks him except the glazers. So, if lovie wants one particular player, he will get him.
I think "yes-man" assumes a lot about Lovie Smith that may or may not be true.
Well, I can assume lovie values his opinion. Especially if HE is bringing him in. Right? But that doesn't mean he can go over lovie's head at any point or time.I mean, they could very well be at odds about a plethora of issues. OL, revis, drafting qb or de..etc. but if lovie says that's it, all lv can do is whip out the checkbook. Just saying.
Ok, well flip it - if all those other things were the job of the GM, why would that necessarily be better? What if Lovie wanted Revis, but the GM said no. What if he thought it was was to stick with Glennon, but Lovie didn't think he was good enough? In other words, if there is that much conflict, "final say" really doesn't matter. Again, it's about a relationship and trust.
Hasn't it already been stated that Lovie will have final say on the final 53, and that the GM will have final say on the draft and probably FA?Lovie isn't being given overriding power on everything - just about who will be playing on the field. That seems reasonable since it'll be his posterior on the line, if there are not enough positive results on the field.I think the GM will be important for keeping Lovie on track and sane.

It has been said numerous times, but facts dont always mean a lot here.

Yeah, but that was one guy on twitter I think and never been confirmed.
@caplannfl: Some nuggets on Bucs GM search: HC Lovie Smith holds final say on 53; GM will hold final say on draft. That's Adam Caplan, he is a pretty connected football writer and it's the same power Chip Kelly and Andy Reid got last year. The yes man in KC Dorsey just got named GM of the year.
Chip Kelly got coach of the year. Would you be surprised if it came out that the Chip Kelly to Tampa deal fell thru because Kelly wanted control of 53 and Dominik wouldn't give it to him? It wouldn't surprise me.

That's the kind of arrangement I like. I honestly thought it was pretty normal for coaches to have final say over the 53. Gruden had that, didn't he?

I would think that would be standard other than places in like New England
