As the NFL gets ready to stage the first-ever cold-weather, open-air Super Bowl, talk once again has emerged regarding the possibility of sending the Super Bowl overseas.Speaking at an event in New York, and based on the Twitter feeds of various reporters who covered it, Goodell didn’t rule out taking America’s ultimate sporting event to London.“I want to grow the game,” Goodell said in response to the possibility of exporting the Super Bowl, via Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post. “Fans want more, and London is a great example.”Per Daniel Kaplan of SportsBusiness Journal, Goodell said that London would get a Super Bowl only if it first had a franchise, which remains a viable possibility. (In 2009, Goodell mentioned that there wouldn’t be a Super Bowl in London unless a team is based in London.)In October, Goodell addressed the question of whether he wants to see a team in London or Los Angeles by saying, “Both.” Last night, he expressed no preference as to the order.“I don’t know which one will be first, and I’m not sure I care,” Goodell said, via Hubbuch. If a team ends up in London, plenty of fans will care. In a bad way. If a Super Bowl ends up in London, plenty more fans will care. In a worse way.Folks in London may care in a non-positive way, too. In order to start the Super Bowl at 6:25 p.m. ET, which delivers a maximum American television audience, the game would have to begin locally at 11:25 p.m. ET.While talking about putting a Super Bowl in London and actually putting a Super Bowl in London are two different things, the league always benefits from having as many interested cities as possible. Staging the game in New York/New Jersey unlocks a new universe of cities (like Denver, Chicago, and Washington) that can craft competitive bids for the game, necessarily forcing other interested cities to step it up financially. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/01/08/goodell-doesnt-rule-out-a-london-super-bowl/
Fans want more = we will make a killing!
dear god quit with the London shit. its too hard to get the timing down. its the same reason why a franchise over there wont work. why not play it in India, or how about Zimbabwe while we're at ita Superbowl there will piss off every fanbase here.
Agreed. Goodell wants to "grow" the game but I think this will kill it.
The Superbowl is an annual economic boom for the host city and this country and he wants to take the game to Europe? #Fuckouttahere
Next stop....Mars!
This is complete and utter bollocks and everyone over here in the UK knows it. American TV dictates the game starts at 6.20pm ET for the huge advertising revenues. Which would be 11.20pm in the UK. Which means the game would not finish until after 3am. So how do you get 80,000 people out of a stadium that would never be allowed to host such an event at that time with no public transport, where the road access is a pile of Schiano? Goodell is talking out of his arse again.

+1
No more London regular season games until they have a Premier League regular season game played in the US. A Super Bowl in another country would be like the UEFA Champions League Final being played in the States. Nothing more than an absurd idea that is absolutely offensive to the folks that have made the NFL what it is: fans.

Goodell and common sense rarely get mentioned in the same sentence. But, when it does happen, it's always a mistake.
televison society versus not television society
Someone please explain how a London team would work. Wouldn't the team be travelling 8 hrs. for a game on the east coast and 12 hrs. for a game against a team in the west for 8 games + 2 exhibition games and possible playoff games? Sounds like the London team will be constantly exhausted. Who would want to play for that team?

its not a bad flight either way and they would probably (just my guess) play series. In other words, if they were in the AFC east, as an example, they would probably come over and play the Jets one weekend and the Bills the next. This arguable traveling disadvantage would be offset by an arguable home advantage. By the way, I think London to Seattle is only a 9 or 10 hour flight. London to Chicago, 8 or 9. Flights to London from here are easy because they are overnight, you just go to sleep . . especially on a charter. Its not that big a deal. Also, living in London is a lot like living in Boston . .or a nice Northeast city
Thanks, Vin.
no worries, obviously a lot of guessing on my part
