During Smith's tenure with the Bears, they ranked higher than 23rd in offense only once. They have ranked 28th or lower four times and finished 28th in 2012. That, combined with the Bears failure to reach the playoffs five out of the last six years, caused them to release Smith.The best year they had under Smith, the year they went to the Super Bowl, was the year they drafted Devin Hester. But by the next year teams stopped kicking the ball to Hester and that was the end of that.In the nine years Smith coached at Chicago, only the Browns averaged fewer offensive yards per game.

Some coaches learn from past failures. Just look at Bill Belichick

You mean the guy that was well on his way to getting fired after his second season if fate hadn't interrupted his suckfest and put Bledsoe on the sidelines.Bill did get better but sometimes there's a whole lot of luck needed.
