Ha, that idea is sure to blow some minds BUT
”In A Way, Baker Mayfield Is Tom Brady For Tampa Bay Buccaneers”
”Two plays later, the Buccaneers surged ahead for good on Mayfield’s 11-yard throw to Cade Otton in the end zone.
“Baker is who we are,” Otton told me. “We believe throughout the whole game. We fight throughout the whole game. That’s kind of the identity were taking on as the team. We have a lot to clean up, but it’s just that belief and fight that gives us a chance. As football players, and as a team, we compete and fight, and that’s who Baker is.”
That’s who Brady was.”
WHAT ABOUT STATISTICALLY … last year to this year, largely the same talent but different offenses and Mayfield and everyone new to this offense?
This is in reference to the final year of Brady, because Otton wasn't here before that.

the article is making the argument that both are clutch.
mayfield is NOT Brady, even in the clutch department, that said though I bet that if one was to compare Brady 2022 to Mayfield 2023 there are some reasonably close stats even though Mayfield and the Bucs have been playing in a new system.
Yes he is Brady in Brady's only losing season as a pro lol. that is about it
No doubt Baker appears to be a good leader but he is a mid level QB, ranked 18th and what more can you ask out of a $4M contract.
Buc fan view - 50% realize he is playing half decent, 50% are expecting Brady version 2021 which doesn't come around often.
They want "the guy" in which maybe 25% of the teams think they have the guy while 75% know they don't have the guy. Of the 25% that think they have the guy, maybe only half of them are the guy.
So far Mahomes has earned that right. A couple of other guys have had sustained success but in terms of Super Bowl victories - Stafford, Flacco, Wilson, and Rodgers are the only ones still in the league with a ring with 3 of those guys winning one more than a decade ago. Hardly anyone would say they are the guy in 2023.
NFL Fan view - Baker is playing pretty good and likely will get an extension if the same coaching staff remains which is likely if Bucs make playoffs.

He’s frustrating as hell to watch, in part because you can tell he’s trying to play conservative, but yes he’s largely doing what the Bucs need him to do.
if memory serves (and it may not) late in games he’s had to bring the Bucs back because the defense gave up a long drive TD in almost no time …seems like that has happened a few times? Could be wrong.

He came in the clutch in the Vikings and Falcons games, but he laid a dud in the first falcon game. Put the team in a position to win against Houston
He also had a shit offense of 11 points, 6 points, 18 points, and 14 points against the Eagles, Lions, Bills, and 49ers. While all of these teams are better than us and not many had penciled in as a WIN, still the offense was crap
the fact of the matter is, i don't think there's one QB you can put on this team and we would become a Superbowl contender. Maybe Mahomes, Lamar Jackson. Trying to think of any others. We would be playoff pretenders with Lawrence, Prescott, Hurts; hey much like their current teams are.
This team is not very good talent wise. mediocre at best. We have 2 good WRs, half decent TE and RB but average per league standards. We got a great OT but 4 mid to JAGS on the offensive line. On the defense, we have some building blocks but nobody is confusing us for a top 5 unit.
team is over/under 6 wins from Vegas and likely closer to the 8 win team we will be this year. Average. Nothing more, nothing less. and guess what exceeded management expectations which could be a bad thing given the "fuck it year" resulting in a playoff contention year.
Mayfield is fine when he is backed with a running game. Canales knows this well...everyone knows this because he isn't accurate enough to lead a pass heavy offense.
I don't know. We are in the bottom 25% in yards per play at 4.9 yards. If I hadn't watched any games I would probably think play calling had a lot to do with that. However, I've watched every game and I've seen BM miss play after play, either by missing on the pass or missing seeing who is open.

Yeah, "fine" isn't the qualifier I'd use. Repeatedly missing open, sometimes WIDE open, receivers game after game after game doesn't qualify as "fine" to me either.
He's consistently inconsistent, and that's the best I can say for him. He's a QB that can be a starter on a bad team, but his best fit is as a backup.

hes definitely frustrating.
He’s having a near career year for him, with stats that aren’t too different than Brady (with roughly the same talent), but a lot of his “success” seems to come from dumping the ball off, at least until it’s “do or die” time.
His touch passes to Godwin and Otton were outstanding. His misses on more routine passes earlier were perplexing.
Mayfield is fine when he is backed with a running game. Canales knows this well.
Agreed
as much as it pains some fans it’s Canales balanced offense that has the Bucs coming on late and barely in contention. This should be obvious just by looking at the Falcons game and particularly the commitment to running and the TD by White
Mayfield in a beneficiary of that system. If he was a better passer we are probably scoring more but who knows if that would translate to many more wins given the struggles on defense
I cant help but root for him and hopes he proves me wrong. Hes got that moxie or "x-factor" and it has something to do with grit. In any case, he's short, thats non modifiable but there have been great ones that were never tall. If he can just get better passing the ball, thats it. Just develop that arm talent, decision making, and killer instinct and thats it, we'll have what we and he have always wanted. Go Baker, work on that deep ball, work on your timing and ball placement. Learn to read that defense to the point where you know what they are doing before they do....then go out there and fak'em up!
He's pretty easy to root for (maybe not if you're a Gator lol), but also frustrating because I think everyone sees the missed chances.
Unfortunately, weak teams don't often go far relying on 4th down conversions and last minute drives. Brady couldn't elevate us past a so-so Cowboys team last year
Enjoy it while we can
Exactly. Some are holding him to the standard of 2020, 2021 Tom Brady. Yeah, he's not that....but can he be a top 15 QB. i think so. Right now, i'd have him in the 15-18 range. He's mid tier
We all want a top 5 QB. i agree. but that guy doesn't exist on the roster today or quite frankly in our franchise history sans Brady for 2 years.
Right now, i'd have him in the 15-18 range. He's mid tier
He's basically an NFL average QB maybe a little better actually IF you account for the offense around him.
I only throw in that last qualifier in because if you compare him to Brady (probably the fairest comparison because the offensive talent is almost the same this year over last AND Brady largely controlled that offense AND they are both facing the same style of defenses ie key on Evans/Godwin) he is surprisingly NOT way behind. I mean, Bardy obviously the GOAT so surprising.
He is NOT. - - emphasize NOT again lol - even close to Brady's talent or smarts, but his stats/record IN THIS offense are not terrible (TD/NT ratio, multiple TD games and a few others) relative to Brady. If the early run game was performing more like it has been lately his stats would be even better.
POINT: he could be much better, but for his history we are getting a lot out of him. He is (imperfectly) playing the "point guard" role that Canales wants and for the most part NOT killing the team with turnovers, so far.
