Mayfield is leaving points on the field, he just is. This poor play is being masked by low INTs and Evans making huge plays. He can't get through progressions quick enough and he can't find throwing lines from in the pocket. That shows up in the box scores as punts.
Spot on.
That doesn't excuse Mayfield's poor play.
I dont think there is anyone here excusing his poor play? I think there are several (not Gators) who have said its very unlkely with the Bucs winning and in a playoff hunt that they will go to Trask "because we need to see what we have."
Some have also said -- myself for sure - that Mayfield is not THE reason for the Bucs standings. Here I will quote it again for you:
If you look at this Bucs team and you say to yourself that they are a legit playoff/super bowl team BUT FOR MAYFIELD holding them back then you know NOTHING about football.
"but for" means that you think the rest of the team is "legit playoff/super bowl" team. Last yeart the self-described football smart set said that the Bucs were "legit/playoff/super bowl team" BUT FOR Byron leftwich . .. .what did the Cowboys have to say about that in the playoffs? Why did we start this year unable to run (just like last year) and why does our defense STILL make no name QBs into a star, give up 400 yards +/- a game , force that Mayfield guy you're bashing to go out and win it in the last second?
weirdly . . . football is about much more than ONE player or coach . .
Last season Brady:
66.8 Comp %
6.4 yd average
2.77 TD to INT ratio
Mayfield so far
62.6 Comp %
6.7 yd average
2.5 TD to INT ratio
Probably more rel;vant thohgh, in terms of where the team struggles lie:
Mayfield career:
61.6 Comp %
7.1 yd average
1.69 TD to INT ratio
So the. Bucs are getting the best of Mayfield. In part, that seems to be because he is trying to get a big contract by playing against his past (2.5 versus 1.69)
Someone said that Brady kills it in this offense. That is probably true but also true he never lets it happen in his last chance season. I think Brady had 700 plus passing attempts last year in an offense that STARTED out running strong (game 1) but ended with a 66/33 pas to run ratio**. Mayfield probably has 400 attempts? The offense is much closer to 55/45 probably?
(**Everyone know that was all Leftwich though, Brady objected VIGOROUSLY but Leftwich forced him to throw that much!)

Yeah.
The GOAT decided that for his FINAL SEASON playing professional football, it would be brilliant to call/orchestrate an offense that consisted of the same 5-6 plays, in the same predictable order, out of the same predictable formation, out of the same predictable personnel groupings, etc.
He thought it would be the icing on the cake of arguably the greatest career in sports, to field an offense so basic and predictable, that there would be multiple games of defensive players caught on film laughing that they knew what was coming.
He thought the best way to go out would be to construct an offense that would see him put up the lowest TD% of his career, his lowest yards per attempt in 20 years, and his lowest intended air yards per attempt in 20 years.
I mean, clearly it was Brady. Hence, the reason Byron was the most highly sought after Offensive Coordinator in the land this past offseason. And, who's clearly killing it in his new role.
You want to judge Mayfield's stats you have to throw away 2019. I say this as a former Browns fan of 65 yrs. Every browns fan in the world knows that the moron Freddie Kitchens was calling plays that were never even practiced during the weekLast season Brady:

6.4 yd average
2.77 TD to INT ratio

In any event, he's 5-0 vs Burrow and took a 1-31 team to the playoffs and won his 3rd season and if Hollywood Higgins doesn't fumble at the goal line they're in the AFC title game
We'll see how he does today 14 games into his 8th HC and 8th OC in just 6 years thru no fault of his own
We'll see how he does
I hope great but the run game and the defense are as important.
Last few weeks Mayfield was not connecting on the intermediate passes. We know that Mayfield can't be consistent hitting the deep ball as the attempts are there. But to move the chains you have to hit the intermediate passes. But also in fairness Kieft shouldn't be running intermediate routes as he is a plodder.

In your world, an inside hire who cant get hired anywhere else has MORE power over pass or run than the GOAT QB who returned for one last shot?
Makes sense. Oops, I think thats supposed to be MaKEs sENse!
Mayfield has thrown for 32+ pass attempts just once in his last six games, and that was a blowout loss to the 49ers where he played with a negative game script.
Brady AVERAGED about 40 attempts?
Guess, but probably not far off
Mayfield is "now on pace for 4,025 yards, 29 TDs and 9 interceptions. Brady had 25 TDs and 9 picks last season!"

baker on pace for a career year
(or one of his best) for the debatable dans
and this includes next weeks loss to Jacksonville
we control our destiny. Win those 2 division games and we are in
Baker showed he can thrive slinging the football around with the Packers game. It looks like the Bucs are now in the conversation of a balanced offense where they can go run heavy or pass heavy depending on opponent.
Bowles praises Mayfield by contrasting him with Brady?
"“I think [Mayfield is] relatable because he’s different and I think we have a different team,” Bowles said. “I think we needed to go a different way.
“It’s worked out for us. The attitude that he brought in, I think would be infectious on a young or an older team. I think that’s just who he is. That part is not that big of a deal, but the leadership he’s shown and the way we’ve tried to change the team around has been outstanding.
“He leads the veterans, as well – he sits with the offense and the defense. He really brought camaraderie and chemistry together in the offseason, as well as summer training camp, to have these guys on the same page so that when we hit hard times, we wouldn’t panic.”
Got to be really hard to follow in Brady’s footsteps.
