I still think he’s destined to come back to earth (along with Canales) but this guy at Forbes is a big fan:

”Mayfield now has six games with at least a 102.4 passer rating. It’s not a stretch to say that Mayfield has actually outplayed Tom Brady during his final season in Tampa Bay. Brady had four games with at least a 102.4 passer rating last season and had the Buccaneers at a 7-8 record through 15 games.

By comparison, Mayfield has the Buccaneers at a record 0f 8-7 through 15 games and in full control of their destiny in the NFC South.”

Fun thread and discussion to recall.

2021 saw Brady throwing the ball to a totally stacked offense that included Gronkowski, Evans, Godwin, Brown, with Playoff Lenny and R Jones running for about 1600 yds. Widely regarded as the Bucs BEST offensive year.

Brady threw 43 TDs and 12 INTs and about 5300 yds on a totally dominant 13-4 team

Mayfield is in his way to 41 TDs and 16 INTs and probably 4,600 yards

Yesterday Mayfield was throwing to two back up TEs (who played great), Evans, MacMillan and Miller(?) with Bucky Irving crushing it out of the backfield.

Great offensive system by Coen and great running game, but give Mayfield credit for producing AGAIN when most of us were certainly unsure about him.

(Lots of concern about Coen leaving but where would this offense be with a healthy Godwin and Otton?)

Ballerz is a badass, he always had the potential, just needed the support.  Going off stats, I would say he's top 3 in the league....maybe top two after Llamar.

Baker Mayfield has a passer rating of 101.3 with 67.9 completion%, 9,009 yards, 73 touchdowns and 27 interceptions in his last 35 games of his career (his entire tenure as QB1 with TB including playoff games).

love Baker but can’t just go off one year. I’m saying 2 years is starting to show who he is with Tampa. It was great to see him progress off of his good first year.

the top 4 can’t really be penetrated at this time - Mahomes, allen, Jackson and borrow.

would give 5 to Goff given the longer tenure of playing at a high level.

would argue Mayfield at 6 how he’s currently playing but while he was fringe top 10, likely top 15 last year, he is a sure fire top 10 currently

Baker Mayfield is his own man and doesn't need to be compared to Brady (who is not the same as Baker). When Baker runs he just freaks out defenses because He (at the same time) will pump fake the crap out of a DB and freeze him because the ole saying "should I stay or should I go" goes through the DB's mind...lol. Baker is one intelligent QB that will get the defenses guessing and then SCORE.

Him being here has shown how other Coaches around the league underestimated him and didn't have the talent around him as in Coaches Assistants or players or both. Carolina, Cleveland and the Rams must be kicking themself in the head over bad decisions. We are Blessed and spoiled at the same time. Our Buccaneer team knows the issues on the defense but they have a very good coaching staff and recognition of weaknesses.

Hang in there and Go Buc's Let's "Shake and Bake"!!

Not going to argue really, just felt like expounding a little on the subject.

Anyway, if we're going by 'which QB is playing the best football in 2024,' well, even as a Chiefs fan, I have to admit that Mahomes isn't playing great ball right now.  I couldn't include Pat among the top-5 QBs in the league in 2024.  The numbers and the tape just don't support that.

If I were going by career, my list would be different.  It would be probably Mahomes, Stafford, Josh Allen, Burrow, Goff, etc.

If I were going to go by "how would I pick my QBs for the playoffs in 2025?" it'd be Mahomes, Josh, Stafford, Baker, then Goff because those are the QBs currently active that have actually improved their level of play consistently in the playoffs.

just depends on how I want to look at it.

i get your point, Baker going to most likely have 40 TD passes this year.  That's very Brady esque

Just to explain my thought process:

Bakers stats are great but i'd have to go with Wins as a metric too so Mahomes still would be greater than Baker despite the inferior stats.

and by wins, i dont mean just 3-4 more wins, but the teams that have 14 and 15 wins...hard to not put them ahead.  Clearly the QB is doing something right. and while i dont blame Baker picks for any reasons we lost, 15 INT is alot.

so Mahomes, Darnold, Golf, Allen, Jackson, and Burrow - makes him 7th by just going off this year.

going by last couple years, would put Baker ahead of Darnold to make him 6.

Mayfield is playing in the top 5 currently. But, overall probably in the top 10 over time with Bucs.

Thats a big win though because most saw him as "average," more in the 15-20 tier

The discussion goes to show you that the league is not just QB driven. Mahomes play is off a bit but the team wins with defense and other ways.  Burrows is an incredible traditional QB, but yet the defense drags the team down.  Mayfield makes great throws and is playing well, but the running game has helped his play and the offense overall and the defense has hurt and helped, occasionally.

Still a team sport.
