There's a long way to go, but it sounds like the early returns are in favor of Trask.Ā So far I think everyone has assumed Mayfield gets the nod and if he stumbles after a half a dozen games or so then Trask gets his chance.Ā But it's a different dynamic if Trask gets the starting job in week 1 IMO.Ā If you go with the young guy, you have to give him a longer rope.Ā You have to factor in some learning on the job.Ā If Trask struggles in the first few weeks, what do you do?Ā The veterans will get impatient.Ā Mayfield will be sitting there waiting for his chance.Ā
But you can't just flip on Trask when you have already factored in that some struggling will happen with an inexperience QB and a new OC.Ā You have to have factored that in and be willing to live with it.Ā Ā And so, if you are Bowles and you factored that in, then you can't later go back on that and lose your patience.Ā You have to stick with your plan, stick with Trask and give him a chance to work through the mistakes.Ā Ā If you aren't willing to do that, then put in Mayfield in the beginning.Ā Ā
New OC.Ā New QB.Ā Coach on the hot seat.Ā How will they mesh?Ā Ā
For Trask to get the nod as the starter for game 1, he would have to be head and shoulders better than Mayfield in TC and the preseason games. If Trask is only moderately better than Mayfield, Bowles will name Mayfield as the starter using the old adage of experience.
Yep. Don't discount the Bowles "My ass is on the chopping block!" factor.
from everything the players are saying, it's not even close
Ā
if you are going by what the coaches are saying, they want to (1) light a fire under both of them (2) see how they perform in the preseason.Ā They wont come out and say anything but whoever gets the first series in the first pre-season game is your starter.Ā
Ā
for example, probably a 99% chance Mayfield is the starter week 1; but let's say Mayfield comes out throws interceptions and Trask looks like Peyton Manning; they want to keep that slim opening until probably 2nd game of pre-season
Ā
the most likely result is Mayfield starts, the Bucs start season 1-6 or 2-5; then we see a little bit of Trask and QB carousal and end up 4-13
Ā
what we are hoping for is that Mayfield starts and turns his career around but Vegas aint betting on itĀ
I would start Trask over Mayfield based on who protects the ball better. Guy has thrown 1 pick and the other has thrown 5 picks. Mayfield has been a turnover machine since he came into league, if its not the INT he is fumbling the ball when sacked. Hope Trask keeps it up because I'd rather take a shot at the unknown.

Ā
Agreed.Ā The only way I'd go with Mayfield is if Trask completely shits the bed and proves he's not an NFL starter.
Maybe Mayfield does a complete shift from he's shown himself to be in the NFL, ala Geno Smith.Ā But the odds of that are low. We know who Mayfield is. We need to find out if Trask is the guy to move forward with for the next decade or not. And if not, he will suck and the team will have a better opportunity to land one of those top two QB prospects.
Ā
Mayfield and Trask are capable of making pre snap reads.Ā But post snap will determine which QB wins based on their decision making.Ā Mayfield is known to take risks and lose sight of the high safety when attacking downfield.Ā Mayfield is very aggressive with the football while Trask is more methodical attacking the intermediate areas.Ā Ā
For Trask to beat out Mayfield I would say that it relies on two possibilities:
1. Mayfield has too many turnovers.
or
2. Trask consistently reads the high safety better which leads to better decision making with the football.Ā
Bowles (any HC in his position ) is NOT going to start Trask because we know what Mayfield is and we need to know what Trask is. Bowles is going to start the one that gives the Bucs the best chance to win.Ā
one reason why bad teams stay bad teams is the turnover causes team goals (know who Trask is) clash with personnel motives (keep my job)
I love what Iām seeing from Trask , Canales has done amazing job with him .hopefully the bucs have future QB on the roster , but if not plenty of good ones in the draft next yearĀ
The Bucs could draft a QB even if Trask performs well.Ā Trask is under contract through 2024, then you have to make the decision with him.Ā A QB draftee could sit for a year under Trask.Ā Licht will take what the draft gives him.Ā It's a good draft for QBs, so Licht could take one regardless.I love what Iām seeing from Trask , Canales has done amazing job with him .hopefully the bucs have future QB on the roster , but if not plenty of good ones in the draft next yearĀ

Ā
And this is the mentality of a bad coach, bad team.
Baker is a proven bust and a journeyman backup.
Bucs used a premium pick on Trask.Ā
Trask is beating Baker out.Ā
Start Baker?Ā
1-3 going into the bye week.Ā
Ā
Bowles (any HC in his position ) Any bad head coach is NOT going to start Trask because we know what Mayfield is and we need to know what Trask is.
Fixed it for you.
If Trask continues to outshine and outperform Baker in camp and PS, then you start him. It's not rocket science.Ā
If Bowles proceeds to start Mayfield because we "know what he is" (which is a below average QB), then Todd should've been axed along with his buddy, Byron.Ā
Bowles has to defer to Canales.Ā He just hired the guy to fix the offense and they have this competition.Ā He can't then tell him which QB he wants him to use to do it.Ā Bowles has to trust in his OC.Ā Of course, it's a group decision blah blah, but in the end I think Bowles will go with whichever guy Canales wants.Ā Now later in the year, if things aren't going well and Bowles is on the chopping block, he'll be more likely to stick his nose into Canales's business and demand a change.Ā ĀBowles (any HC in his position ) Any bad head coach is NOT going to start Trask because we know what Mayfield is and we need to know what Trask is.

If Bowles is on the chopping block, that doesn't mean Canales is.Ā Canales's future isn't tied to Bowles. Canales needs to take that into account. He's trying to build something, and he can have more patience than Bowles.Ā Ā That could cause a conflict if it comes to the middle of the season and Bowles' seat keeps getting hotter.Ā Of course we could have a winning season and it's all good then.Ā Ā
Ā
I'm always skeptical of camp hype. Year after year we see it... I can name 20 bucs that got the same hype but did zero when it mattered.
That being said I'm totally fine with Trask starting so we see what we have... maybe he can shut the haters like me up. I'd love itĀ

Agree camp hype happens every year. Let's see it go to work. Long season ahead.Ā
