It depends. If this happens and Mayfield is OK with being a backup, then you keep him. 1) He's only earning $4 mil and that's basically backup money. He's not hurting your cap. 2) The bloom is off the rose for Mayfield. In the past maybe he'd be a distraction in the locker room because he's Baker Mayfield, but he doesn't carry that same weight anymore. He's a journeyman. Nobody is going to be clamoring to put Mayfield in there the first time Trask screws up, because nobody is under the impression that Mayfield is going to come in and save the day. IMO Mayfield could be a backup on this team if it comes to that, but it depends on whether he'll accept that role. If we cut him loose he's not going to find another team who wants to make him the starter. If Trask outperforms Mayfield then name Trask the starter and cut Mayfield. Pretty simple.
If Trask beats out Mayfield, then we dont need him looking over his shoulder.
Trask likely mentally tough given his climb through college ranks to starting job.
Mayfield wants to be starter so not sure Trask would need a guy like that as his #2. Gabbert would have been better suited for that role.

Ex-Browns and Jets head coach Eric Mangini, the former right hand man of Bill Belicheat, chimed in to say that he’s certain Todd Bowles and new offensive coordinator Dave Canales will be riding the Baker bandwagon when a decision is made in a couple of weeks.
‘The coaches are going to feel more comfortable with Baker because of his experience, his poise, his presence, and that comes with age and with getting a chance to play,” Mangini said.
However, Mangini said he expects the Tampa Bay front office to come down on the side of Trask if the competition is close.
Jimmy Garrappolo's coach about his seven picks:
McDaniels says he has "no concerns" over the picks in practice. "We've also seen some very good throws. It's a very competitive camp," McDaniels said, per The Athletic. McDaniels added that instead of focusing on the quarterback's mistakes they should "credit the other side when they make a play."
Baker Mayfields' coach about his seven picks-
Bowles: No matter what don't turn the ball over. Don't ever turn the ball over. You definitely don't want to turn the ball over.
Quite a difference in philosophy there.
Past quotes from Bowles:
"Name of the game is turnovers"
"Whoever wins the turnover battle usually wins this (TB v NO) ball game."

talk about apples to orangutans comparison lol
Josh McDaniels agrees with Bowles:
”It's tough to overcome," said Raiders Coach Josh McDaniels in his postgame press conference. "If you lose the turnover battle in this league, most of the time, you lose the game.”
It’s just that they have completely different motivations when you compare them.
Baker Mayfield To Start #Bucs Preseason Game vs. #Steelers
Baker Mayfield and Kyle Trask will alternate starts in the #GoBucs ' first two preseason games.
Mayfield gets the first start.

Yes it's a different situation. For one, they cut loose Carr and paid Garrappolo three years and $75 mil or so, so they don't have a choice but to stick with him, whereas the Bucs are not financially locked into Mayfield and they do have a choice.Josh McDaniels agrees with Bowles:

Of course every coach is concerned about turnovers, but it still seems Bowles is fixated on that more than most on both sides of the ball. And I don't have a problem with that. Mayfield may be just getting warmed up. He may be testing the limits to see where to throw the ball and when. It makes sense, but Bowles may be looking at practice as practice not turning the ball over. In any case, the preseason games are more important than the practices, but I don't think Mayfield has a lot of leeway to make mistakes there. If he was not turning the ball over in practice and the preseason games didn't go that well you could say well he practiced well. But Mayfield doesn't have that to fall back on. He needs to take care of the ball in the preseason games.
Couldn't care less what Bowles thinks of Trask or Baker.
He won't be here next year.
Care more about what Canales thinks.
They will go with Mayfield, not because he deserves it, but because he can be a scapegoat the HC. Starting Trask is too bold a move for Bowles a defensive conservative coach.
Someone has to go first lol
lets see how they play in actual games
The fact that baker hasn’t separated himself, more on a reflection of his interceptions, is not a good sign
Looking like a QB carousel type season if neither separates themselves in preseason
Based on what I have read Mayfield hasn't pulled away from Trask and it is close. But it will come down to protecting the football in pre season and pre snap reads. Mayfield has to be able to know where that high safety is lurking because he tends to take risks downfield with the ball and loses track of that high safety. Trask on the other hand if he shows he can process quickly pre snap and audible he will keep the competition close with Mayfield.
This battle is not about athleticism as Mayfield is more of a sandlot player while Trask is capable of improvising too. But what both of these players must show is if they can analyze things pre snap.
Pre snap matters in Canales system because the motion not only gives you potential mistmatches and miscommunication against the defense. But it is also a way for the QBs to pre diagnose what the defense may do post snap.
It is the QB that shows better mental game that will prevail.
Neither inspire confidence at this point but camp is camp.
Let's see how it goes when it matters most...
The preseason games are important, but they can't be the "be all end all" when it comes to choosing. There are only three games to split between two guys and much of the time the players won't be the regular season starters. The practices do matter.
If one guy is clearly better than the other in the games, then of course they'll probably go with that guy. But don't nitpick the games and say Mayfield led four good drives and Trask only led three good drives then it's Mayfield.
IMO for Trask they will want to see him show the same progress he allegedly showed in practice translate over to the game. For Mayfield they will want him to clean up the mistakes, to show that it was just a matter of knocking off the rust and getting used to the system.
So, I'm going to go out on a limb and say it's 60-40 in favor of Trask for this reason: Practices do count. Everybody talks about the experience of Mayfield and how Bowles wants the experienced guy. I think Bowles and Canales are simply going to ask themselves who's the better quarterback? Just because Mayfield has the experience isn't going to win the battle for him. I think the experience factor is being overblown by the fans and press. Mayfield has to show that experience and mixed bag practices lead to productive performances in the games. He has to show he's clearly better than Trask or he won't win the job.
I'm calling it for Trask unless Mayfield significantly outplays him.
