Well it is hard to gauge how well the QBs protect the football in practice when a lot of the coaches admit that they had the QBs throw sooner than they wanted to simulate pressures/sacks.
But this is why I am thinking the QB that makes better decisions during pre season games will earn more credibility and be many steps closer to be named QB1.
I am going in the opposite direction and will say that it is really a virtual tie at the moment between Mayfield and Trask. The QB that makes more mistakes during game situations whether delay penalties, fumbles snaps, and Ints will lose ground.
Yes practices do matter but that is a controlled environment against teammates they have been practicing against the entire off season. A new opponent will show which QB is able to adapt and limit mistakes.
So the practice scrimmages will matter along with the pre season games.
Whoever gives us the best shot in the Maye/Williams Sweepstakes should be the starter.
judging by the twitter clips, mayfield has a confidence about him like he’s already the starter
is he that delusional or what are your thoughts on that?
That's just Mayfield's schtick, confidence and swag. Can't wait to see what happens in the preseason games with no limits on defense hitting the QB.
I think Mayfield is mature, but I don't sense that he thinks he's a lock. His contract doesn't say that. I don't think Bowles and Canales tell the public there's a QB battle and then tell Mayfield in private "Oh don't pay attention to that you're the starter." So to sum it up, if he thinks he's a lock to be the starter then yes he's delusional. The preseason games are important, but they can't be the "be all end all" when it comes to choosing. There are only three games to split between two guys and much of the time the players won't be the regular season starters. The practices do matter.
If one guy is clearly better than the other in the games, then of course they'll probably go with that guy. But don't nitpick the games and say Mayfield led four good drives and Trask only led three good drives then it's Mayfield.
IMO for Trask they will want to see him show the same progress he allegedly showed in practice translate over to the game. For Mayfield they will want him to clean up the mistakes, to show that it was just a matter of knocking off the rust and getting used to the system.
So, I'm going to go out on a limb and say it's 60-40 in favor of Trask for this reason: Practices do count. Everybody talks about the experience of Mayfield and how Bowles wants the experienced guy. I think Bowles and Canales are simply going to ask themselves who's the better quarterback? Just because Mayfield has the experience isn't going to win the battle for him. I think the experience factor is being overblown by the fans and press. Mayfield has to show that experience and mixed bag practices lead to productive performances in the games. He has to show he's clearly better than Trask or he won't win the job.
I'm calling it for Trask unless Mayfield significantly outplays him.
Hope you are right.

Yeah that is Mayfield as he has a lot of highs and a lot of lows so he isn't changing. But if Trask shows growth and limits mistakes Trask has a real shot of winning.
As mentioned in another thread, Baker Mayfield's career QBR is a point less than Jameis Winston's. Reports from camp are saying Mayfield is throwing interceptions in practice. You know, if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck it is probably a turnover machine. Let's see what Trask can do.
He has to show he's clearly better than Trask or he won't win the job
Probably reverse of that

oh let's be clear, no one is saying either one is clear starter. if anything, i think we have a 98% chance of a QB carousal. This conversation is strictly around the Week 1 starter
it is indeed a QB competition and no one is locked in. Just saying it is Baker Mayfield's job to lose
just look at what teams usually do. They have the veteran for a few weeks and then put in the young rookie by week 6, 7.
in this case, Trask is a 3rd year guy but same gist where the front office is likely rooking for their draft pick. Bowles and Canales may lean towards the veteran strictly for job security and what will put them in the best position to succeed in their roles...so if it's a coin flip, tie likely goes to Mayfield here...for WEEK 1.
if one is head and shoulders above the other, then yeah, that guy has got the job; but let's be honest, they probably are neck and neck
we shall see...just stating what i believe many pundits would consider a forgone conclusion...Mayfield week 1 starter with Trask definitely seeing some time this year sans a Mayfield career comeback type of season
in terms of the depth chart "OR"; they clearly aren't blown away with Mayfields performance thus far and same with Trask; and want to light a fire under both of them in pre-season game 1 and 2
As to the "QB Carousel" - that would indicate that Bowles did not make the right decision in the first place. That's a critical decision, and Bowles does not have a long enough leash to make the wrong one on such a critical call. Look you don't always have to have the superstar QB if you have a good team. Teams have won with names like Heinicke and Foles and even Trent Dilfer. They have a good team and are able to piece together wins with a lower level QB. Just because we don't have Trevor Lawrence or Joe Burrow doesn't mean we can't win games.
If things go well it will be because we get smart serviceable play from the QB. It's conceivable that either one of these guys could do that. The fact is the Bucs scored 18 points a game last year and still would have gone 9-8 if they chose not to rest guys the last game. They don't have a bad team, but the question is whether these guys are fired up to play for Bowles, whether Bowles can make the right call on the QB, whether Canales can get the offensive line in order and get his offense to work.
We have a chance this year, but the coaching staff has to come through. There are no excuses. And if he has to switch QBs for performance reasons, then it's already too late. The shark will have been jumped. The ship sailed. The Naysayers proven right. Wait til' next year.
It's possible that either one of Mayfield or Trask could be that serviceable QB, nothing more. That may be all we need. But Bowles has to get the right guy. He has to get it right on the first try.
mayfield to start week 1 vs vikings per jbf. nail in the coffin for trask

Get ready for some Jamies Winston like highlights.
This was as expected tho, wasn’t it?
the coaching staff does their thing in training camp and some of you automatically bite.
hopefully mayfield is the guy but it’s probably 50/50 trask is starting after the bye week….then mayfield again in week 7
doesnt mean the coaching staff picked wrong, just means they don’t have a top QB on the roster.
