I get that Bowles is on a very warm seat going into the season. I just don't see how you can possibly name a week 1 starter when there hasnt even been a preseason snap taken yet, especially after saying that the QBs would alternate starts "and then go from there". Either this was the QB competition that never was, Bowles is squirming because of said warm seat and jumping the gun going with experience, or Ira is just plain full of shit. I don't get how you can preach not turning the ball over, and then supposedly name a starter ( who has thrown more Ints in practice ) the day before we've even played our first preseason game. I'm thinking Ira is just plain full of shit.
This was as expected tho, wasn’t it?
the coaching staff does their thing in training camp and some of you automatically bite.
hopefully mayfield is the guy but it’s probably 50/50 trask is starting after the bye week….then mayfield again in week 7
doesnt mean the coaching staff picked wrong, just means they don’t have a top QB on the roster.
agreed
Lol. You're "flip flop just for the heck of it" theory doesn't make sense. What kind of plan is that? If Trask is better in Week 7, then he's already better now. If Mayfield is better now, then he's still better in two months from now. You had your competition, fake or real. Pick your poison and stick with him. If Bowles starts flip flopping QBs then it's already too late for him. This decision is too important. If it turns out he picked the wrong guy, he's dead man walking. This was as expected tho, wasn’t it?

If JBF is correct, then I'm wrong about Trask being 60-40 favorite. But if Trask outplays Mayfield and they still go with Mayfield they're going to look like asses. And if Mayfield stinks in the first couple weeks, they will look even more like asses. If Trask then comes in and does well after they blew the season- Asses x Asses x Asses = Asses Cubed.
If neither QB clearly emerges themselves I don't see it as a wrong choice if the Bucs end up in a QB carousel by mid season. It just means neither would have been the right choice long term. I mean Trask or Mayfield could come in mid season and make a winning streak run but does that mean it was a the wrong choice? I am not sure I buy it because at that point the Bucs are still looking to draft a QB in a very deep 2024 QB draft regardless.
My position has been for a while now that it really doesn't matter which QB starts as long as the other pieces on offense are functional and the defense plays at a high level. The running game has to look NFL average and the offense has to offer varied looks and be more dynamic. That is what the national media pundits are missing big time when evaluating the team.
The national media pundits are hyper focused on the QB competition but that Cowboys playoff loss exposed the Bucs offensive scheme and the lack of depth/speed on the defensive front.
Both of those two major weaknesses were addressed in the off season.
Basically if the Bucs offensive scheme generates enough points and the defense actually plays up to its potential that this team is in position to welcome a new QB in 2024 with ease with many pieces already in place. Or just ride it out with which ever QB emerges this season (Mayfield or Trask).
The fact that the national media is pumping the Saints, Panthers and Falcons while lumping the Bucs in with the Cardinals is very telling that they are not paying attention at all when it comes to entire team's structure.
Bucs team structure fundamentally isn't flawed.
Bucs coaches are the ones that have to really step it up with a roster that is capable of being a .500 club or better.
Buccaneers planning to start baker week one of the regular season.
not surprised.
Either one steps up or they both stink , and bucs will have handful of QBs to choose from next years draft .
win win situation
This goes much deeper than the local media watching practice and fans having emotional ties. I check out other team sites and see interceptions from Rodgers and Carr and Wilson etc. and there isn’t a training count. That has been way over played.

lol what world are you living in?
they both are mediocre at best QBs hence the flip flop QB carousal.
think back to the year 2018....Fitzpatrick and Jameis
say the Bucs are 1-3 or 0-4 at the bye week. This likely means Mayfield has been "blah". Wouldnt it make sense to see what they have in Trask?
you view is to see what you have in Trask NOW....but if that is the route they wanted to take, they never would have signed Mayfield.
Bucs want to compete for playoffs this year and if they are 0-4 at the bye week....that aint happening...
but what i am saying is Trask may be so brutally bad that you will see him and Mayfield likely alternate....on our way to a 3-14 season...
or we could go 9-8 if Mayfield turns his career around...stay tuned.
Bowles is so predictable. He says all the right things being politically correct and then goes against it when its time to make the hard decisions. The proof lies within his background since being a HC with the Jets.
Mayfield will be handed the job regardless of how he plays despite what they've been saying. And with that, I think Bucs will come out hot maybe 2-2 to the season. Teams figure out Mayfield, we lost the next 5, Kyle comes in wins 3-4 games...bucs fans play "what if we started Kyle week 1" and we finish 5-12 picking #4 in 2024
This team rolling out UDFA at NICKEL CB in 2023 is more EGREGIOUS than starting a bust QB Baker Mayfield.

Mayfield's stats are comparable to Winston's, and I don't believe anyone on this board would be OK if the Bucs brought back Winston to start the season. Just saying...
I agree, the decision is based on politics as opposed to performance. A coach on a very warm seat may be able to survive another year by pointing to his QB situation as the cause. Baker is who Baker is, Trask is the “fairly” unknown variable here. The boldest move would be to start Trask if he wins the job, but it’s a gamble, very few ppl have the balls for that though. The safest thing for Bowles to do in order to protect his job is to start Baker and cross his fingers. Next best is if Baker sucks, he puts in Trask, and if Trask ends on a hot streak, Bowles wins. At the end of the day Bowles will make the decision that best helps him angle for another year as HC….unfortunately.

and what is the point you are trying to make?
think the Bucs cap hit for Brady this year is like 25 or 35 million. I can’t recall but you can see the point in the Bucs “biting the bullet” to get the cap right
Getting mayfield for 4 million could end up being the offseason move of the year. Or it could be a swing and a miss but no downside really
bucs front office and ownership wants to win but I believe they fully realize this can be a top 5 pick season as well
We both agree then that the number of chances Bowles has to get it right is less than two. They both may be mediocre quarterbacks, but that doesn't mean they will be failures. They just have to manage the game, not screw it up. I don't care who you want to blame. Fact is they scored 18 points a game last year, not 28! Why is it so hard to believe they can't boost that up a bit, combine that with a good defense and win some games?Lol. You're "flip flop just for the heck of it" theory doesn't make sense. We have good players on the team. You are right, whichever QB we have is not going to be top ten or even top 20 most likely. Just run the offense. Get some points and don't turn the ball over. Bowles knows that. We have a team who can win if we win the turnover battle. Give our star players a chance to win games. Don't screw it up and we'll just see how it shakes out. Whatever the W-L record may be, if the QB just plays competently and gives the rest of the team a chance that's the best we can reasonably expect. If they do that, then Bowles has made the right choice.
Right the Bucs don't need QB1 to be a hero with the weapons on offense. Right now Mayfield seems to have the edge with the first pre season game but that could change when Trask is working with the 1s next week.
Definitely looks like Mayfield has a big edge right now. He didn't make any mistakes. Trask wasn't terrible and he didn't get a lot of time to throw, but we didn't see anything that would make you think we should be starting him over Mayfield.
