Nobody is in denial to who Bowles is going to be dumb enough to start. There are just those of you in denial as to who the better QB for the season long term is. Mayfield will be lucky to make it to the BYE, much less past it, especially if the line struggles to pass protect. Trask shakes things off and doesn't get flustered by the rush when it's getting to him. Mayfield turns into an interception machine, much like Winston did. And thinking Trask can't get us to the playoffs, despite how quickly he has improved, is just ridiculous. You have no clue to as to whether or not he can improve to a playoff caliber QB because he hasn't been given the chance.

Quite frankly, if I owned the club I'd tell Bowles he can go with whomever he likes at QB, but if he choses Mayfield, he better make it to the playoffs and win a game. If he goes with Trask, I'd give him a free year to get things going. That's really the way the franchise should be approaching this season; give it to Trask and see how we do and if he continues to improve to the point where he looks like the long-term answer, and, if not, draft one in the offseason. This isn't a Super Bowl team, and Mayfield isn't going to turn us into one, so the team should be focused on getting good this year and trying to make a legitimate run next season, while hoping you might just get lucky and make a run this year.

Evidently people still are tho. Scroll up

listen, with trask, our offense would be worse and we’d get a better draft pick

So it’s ok to be torn, but this delusional notion that trask gives us a better chance to win is absurd

i could only foresee the handling of this “competition” will lead to the end of Bowles as head coach come 2024

Well, see, that's the problem. While the offense may start out worse with Trask, based on his ability to get better quickly that he's shown here lately, and showed at UF, I believe he'll be much better later in the season, as Baker is very likely to revert to his interception throwing form. The tell is that Trask is doing what he has despite no real experience in the regular season. Mayfield is playing like he is despite over 60 games of experience as a starter. In other words, Baker is already near his ceiling, while Trask is showing what is floor is.

This offense requires the QB to distribute the ball quickly and it isn't asking them to make hard throws into tight windows with 5 step drop backs.  So under such conditions whatever experience edge Mayfield had over Trask is diminished.  And even then in a five step drop back offense Trask who is taller would thrive better while Mayfield clearly shows he is comfortable in shotgun and rollout/bootleg offense that Canales runs.

The focus should be on the OL because frankly neither QB will succeed if the OL can not generate a running game and pass protect.

it's ridiculous to think he's trying to protect Mayfield.

Why?

Isn’t the sad state of the O-line another thing that favors Mayfield? He’s more mobile and more experienced

While true Trask showed he could climb the pocket to avoid the rush and he is bigger and younger with less wear and tear. Mayfield's smaller frame is why he needs a good OL to protect him.  Similar concern with the Panthers drafting Bryce Young and the Panthers OL looks worse than the Bucs.  And that is with Feiler and Wirfs not out there so far this pre season.

Honestly expect to see a lot of 12 personnel usage which is fine with me because Mayfield/Trask are going to need help and the RBs are going to need some breathing room to make plays.

Sean Payton said the other day that 40% of Russell Wilson’s TD passes with the Seahawks were from outside the pocket

Matera needs to chill out.  Sure, the starter not to be named is Mayfield.  Why don't they just name him?  Because they committed to a process and they're following through with the process.  Long ago they said Mayfield would start week 1 and Trask week 2.  They never said who would start week 3, so obviously the winner would start week 3.  They'll watch the film of Week 2 evaluate everything, and come to a conclusion.  Sure it's a foregone conclusion, but what's wrong with having a plan and sticking to it?  Matera and others need to relax.  They'll name the starter Tuesday or Wednesday.

Agree with Bucharbour that Bowles is on the hook for this decision.  It seems like an easy decision to go with the guy who has the experience and the "moxie", but screw all that.  Just pick the better QB, because a bad QB will be exposed no matter how much moxie he has.  If he picks Mayfield and switches to Trask that means he admits made the wrong choice and should be held accountable for that choice.   If Mayfield is better, play him.  But I hope it's because he's better, not just because he has "moxie."

Even a blind squirrel finds a nut now and then.

Mayfield's experience was akin to Winston's experience. I don't get it, but I wasn't in the QB room, or at the practices. Hopefully, the coaches made the correct decision.

I guess "psychologically" it makes more sense to start Mayfield.  But Trask has the signs of a real solid QB.  If I was GM, Trask is getting the nod.  Not sure what we are waiting on.

I think a lot of it too is the fact that Baker's skillset is a better match for what Canales wants to do on offense with all the boots and rollouts. The offensive design is simply more creative with Baker in than it is with Trask. I think Trask is solid and could function as a starter in this league. He may never be in the top half, but maybe with more time he develops into that. I just see Baker as being a better fit for this offense in general, and on top of that, he has played well (albiet with limited reps in the preseason).

The INTs in camp dont concern me. Thats the time to push things and see what his new teammates can do. Who wins the jump balls like Mike or makes the crazy athletic catches like DT. When the lights come on, Baker was great. We will see what he looks like with extended work on saturday, and I hope we get 30min of the same play.
