Only a few years ago Mayfield takes the Browns to a playoff win?

If that’s right then it was always the case that Trask had to do something extraordinary to beat him out. Mayfield is much more experienced and a better fit in the offense.

no knock on Trask that a HC like Bowles (fighting for job) would go with Mayfield.

it's much easier in a room full with veteran players to show that you "tried" with a first overall veteran QB who's NFL resume is something only Trask can dream of (over 20 TDs in 3 seasons, won a playoff game)

if it doesn't work out, you can shift to getting Trask some NFL playing time to see if he is the guy next year as well.

i think it's very likely both QBs see time this year.

if the objective is to "tank" without saying it, you start Trask and see how it goes

if the objective is to try and make playoffs, you start season with Mayfield.

to be clear, neither choice is great but they made the right choice and hopefully they can work these next 2 weeks getting Mayfield all the reps and he's good to go with his guys.

key issue will once again be the offensive line.

This is one disappointing aspect of all of this. Excited to see the new offense, but poor line play could keep us all from really seeing it.

the offense is at its best when the rim game is popping.

Bucs fans may recall the turbulent fallout from the 2008 season. Monte Kiffen was departing and Buc’s defensive backs coach Raheem Morris was promoted to defensive coordinator. Soon after, head coach John Gruden and general manager Bruce Allen both got the hook. Morris then accepted the head coach role and Mark Dominik became the general manager.

And on the quarterback front, there were also major changes. The 2008 quarterback-by-committee was put to the curb: Jeff Garcia was released, Luke McCown was traded, Brian Griese was cut, however Gruden’s science project Josh Johnson was kept. The Morris/Dominik duo drafted Josh Thompson out of Kansas State and signed veteran Byron Leftwich.

So to start off the 2009 season, the Bucs had the experienced veteran, the unproven kid and the unknown third stringer, akin to our current situation of Mayfield, Trask and Wolford. The season plan was for Thompson to ride the pine and learn from the veteran. After three straight losses and being outscored 91-41, the plan derailed. However, instead of going to the kid, Morris went with the science experiment. I remember radioman Ian Beckles saying, ‘these people [Buc’s coaching staff] have no idea what to do, so they decided they had better do something”. So Josh Johnson took the reins until most of the way though the seventh straight loss and the kid, Josh Thompson, finally got the call. Thompson did win his first start against Green Bay, but the Bucs finished the season with a dismal 3-13 record.

Now was benching Leftwich the answer? With the defense bleeding points the coaching staff felt a change was needed to scor more points. Regardless, the coaches were definitely feeling the pressure to act and act they did.

Which brings us to 2023. Can Baker Mayfield deliver the goods and wins to keep the plan on track? If the o-line can give him time and the defense keep him close, there is hope for an OK (9-8) season. If it turns into to mad scrambles and desperate “several scores down” throws, the coaching staff will be forced to act and we will be seeing the kid and the science experiment – but in what order?

At Bucs33Saints14.  I am sure you meant Josh Freeman instead of Josh Thompson.

Yeah.   I'll stick with my stance that if they have to switch QBs it's already too late for Todd Bowles.   That means the Bucs are on the road to a bad season.  The earliest he could conceivably make the switch without being accused of hitting the panic button is after the Bills Thursday game, putting Trask in for Week 8  That means they are probably 2-5 or worse by then.

So at that point two things could happen. 1) Trask plays well, the Bucs win some games and get back in the hunt.  In which case Bowles should be fired for not putting the better QB in in the first place.  Or 2) Trask plays poorly and the Bucs keep losing and Bowles is fired.  So either way Bowles should be fired.

Once the Bucs are realistically eliminated from contention who gives a flip who's QB at that point?  All this talk about playing Mayfield until he sucks and then put in Trask makes no sense, because it means the Bucs are out of it.  Bowles has one chance.  He's taking his shot with Mayfield.  He should just ride with his decision. Barring injury he has no reason to switch QBs when it still matters.

Mayfield 3 - Trask 1

Let's hope that Mayfield and the first team offense including Evans can bring it during the regular season. It's refreshing to see an offense with creativity and energy. Regardless of the results, it looks like this will be a fun team to watch and pull for.

Well, I for one am glad to be wrong about Trask. He might not be the starter, but he looks like he’s got a future in the league.

He certainly looked better than previous years

how this season plays out determines his future

he needs to hope Mayfield falters so he gets a chance

Its unlikely he starts in this league but many men have made millions by being career back ups

Trask looks better. Glad to see it.

He's still pretty slow so the lack of mobility is tough to watch behind our trash line.

Mayfield makes a ton of sense in a variety of ways.

Hopefully we are 2-2 to start the season at a minimum otherwise it could go sideways.

Just read on the Sporting News where Vinnie Iyer has ranked the starting QB's. He has Baker Mayfield listed at #32, the worst of any starting QB.

i would say he is out of the top 20 to start the year, but not the worst

He's better or in the same ball park as Anthony Richardson, Jimmy G, CJ Stroud, Kenny Pickett, Mac Jones, Desmond Ridder, Bryce Young, Jordan Love, Daniel Jones, and Sam Howell to name a few.
