NFL Free Agency rumors: Josh McCown wants to play in 2014By Josh Hill - Jan 19th, 2014 at 1:08 pm The future of soon-to-be free agent backup quarterback Josh McCown seemed to be a little hazy earlier this offseason as there was some doubt as to whether he’d return or not for another season. But despite reports of possible retirement swirling, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that McCown has no intentions of retiring anytime soon.
It’s likely that while he’s not retiring, his career in Chicago is still over anyways. The Bears forked over a ton of cash to keep Jay Cutler in town which means that they will have to chose who to bring back and who to let loose. While the Bears would love to bring McCown back, it’s likely that he ends up in a place like Tampa Bay where former Bears head coach Lovie Smith can not only pay him a decent amount of money, but can position him well on the roster to possibly even start in 2014. A return to the Bears isn’t out of the question for McCown, but he now has options after his great 2013 performance and retirement isn’t yet on his mind. http://fansided.com/2014/01/19/nfl-free-agency-rumors-josh-mccown-play-2014-tampa-bay-buccaneers/?utm_source=FanSided&utm_medium=Network&utm_campaign=Around%20the%20Network
He saved my fantasy season week 14, but no thanks. He is a family man, and acknowledges his role as a backup. If I was the GM, I couldn't trust that his heart was still in the game, I think he just wants to re-up for a contract and set up a retirement.
Of course you sign this guy if you can. We have Twiggy and Big O.
Of course we NEED to sign this guy, but starting him? I see no benefit.
Everyone here pretty much agrees that Glennon should have competition at the very least and yet here is a guy that probably could beat him out and you don't see the benefit.

No I don't see the benefit of starting a QB that will be 35 by the time the season starts. When we have a guy that did fairly well for a rookie with bad coaching.
So Glennon should be handed the job?

Handed the job? I think he earned the right to at least start next season with a real coaching staff. Unless he's extremely bad he won't lose the job to McCown.
The a Glazers just spent a lot of money on this new staff for results. It's this staff responsibility to provide those results. If Glennon is the best QB they can get then so be it but Isn't the whole point of competition to have them push each other and let the best man win and thus have the best players on the field to give the team the best chance to win? You afraid Glennon couldn't legitimately best out a 35 year old career backup?

Where did I say I was afraid? All I said was there would be no benefit to him starting. If Glennon plays that awfully then McCown will start and we will be drafting a QB again. Because McCown will be 36 next season. So starting a QB for one season doesn't benefit at all long term. Glennon just had a rookie season. He's got a lot more left in the tank.
I honestly think McCown could beat him out though if he is playing anywhere close to how he played this last year.

I like McCown a lot. We will see what happens.
i would like to see glennon throwing to brandon marshall, alshon jeffery, martellus bennett, earl bennett, and matt forte in an NFL system...just to get a glimpse of how it compares to an injured vjax, tiquaun, tim wright, bobby rainey, and osusu in sullivans system.
Well GT, if we do sign him you would get to see them on a level playing field. All I'm saying is let the best man win then if that's how this new staff wants to address the QB position this season. Most of us agree at the very least there should be competition. Well let it be real competition.
what would ever give you reason to think that lovie and tedford are going to come in playing favorites and putting on fake competitons? what makes you think lovie doesnt want the best players on the field?
