Don't buy this one bit. We don't have leverage here. If we don't pay him some team will. He's 26 and clearly one of the best and most disruptive D-linemen in the game. If anything the Seahawks SB performance helped put a few more dollars in his pocket. Teams now really see the importance of putting pressure on a QB. It will be as expensive as we think and he's so worth it.
I disagree with you and JC5100 on this. We have the leverage of a long term contract with guaranteed money. While placing the franchise tag on him a couple seasons would get expensive on our end, giving him a 6 year deal with say $50 million in guaranteed money is a HUGE point of leverage on a game this violent.
6yrs/$50 million guaranteed is a win for Mccoy. A huge win in fact and much more than Atkins (just $31 million). He wont get franchised either as that number would be close to $20 million..McCoy is going to be expensive. Theres no way around it.
Its a win for both sides man. Suh and McCoy will both get more than Atkins, but his deal is certainly a blueprint. If we end up signing McCoy for around $12 mil a year with $50 mil of it being guaranteed its a win for him with a long term deal and its a win for us by lowering his current cap hit. Win win situation.
We are in agreeance here. I think if anything their rookie deals are the blue print. 1 thing is for sure. If we are to give him $50 million guaranteed and $12 million a year he will get a signing bonus. His cap number will always be high but so will the production.

He can make $35M being franchised 2 years

He can also suffer a career ending injury during one of those years. Thats why franchise players DO NOT like receiving the franchise tag.
McCoy's expecting twins.. Pay da man!!
My guess is that McCoy's cap number will remain approximately the same as it has been no matter the total of the contract.

That's right.. Twins!!! That man is winning!!
Its all about guaranteed money. They will get it done.Revis has zero guaranteed money in his deal. He makes 16mil per season. They may try to redo his deal this offseason. Offer him less money per season, but have some of it guaranteed. I think he would jump on that.
McCoy's expecting twins.. Pay da man!!
The last "pay da man" campaign hasn't had great results....maybe we shouldn't continue that slogan into the McCoy extension....
I don't think McCoy will even want to test Free Agency. Especially now that Lovie is here. I think Gerald is the type of guy that wants to retire with the team who drafted him. He has already raked in over $60M in his first 4 years...so money isn't a real big concern. He's a down to Earth family man. I think he takes a reasonable deal that keeps him as a top three paid DT. Probably average $12M+/yr because of a huge 6th year that he'll never really get....and include about $35M guaranteed....but I think he will definitely stay and I think his cap hit will actually go down a little. Suh will get something very similar, but in reality they will both be getting around $10M a year. Atkins deal is the actually cost of a top 3 DT in this league. Suh's and McCoy's contracts are relic of an old system and will not be used to base new contracts on.
All the more reason to draft Aaron Donald. Gives us an insurance policy just in case McCoy does decide to get froggy and hold us hostage.
Pay the man. I have a feeling Lovie and McCoy are going to be REALLY close amigos and we get a more than fair deal.

We're not sure the last pay da man campaign is a lost cause yet.And McCoy is the type of guy I would have no worries about paying. He's already loaded and all he does it work to be great. "Pay Dat Man"
With our luck we'll resign him to a huge deal and then his biceps will immediately tear as he is signing the contract.

Man's gotta feed his family...
Feed his family? I could almost die when I hear some players say that. Dude is a millionaire 63 times over. He could suffer a career ending injury tonight and still feed his children off of a silver platter for the rest of their lives.
