Apparently my Throw McKay in the Bay thread got deleted? Huh, why? There was a reason for it, it was this...Bumper stickers started to appear in the Tampa Bay area with "Throw McKay in the Bay" printed on them. Shortly thereafter, a t-shirt with a sinking pirate ship emblazoned on it held the caption "Go for 0." Letters to the editor were full of angry comments from fans such as one who commented that he had a picture of John McKay in his office: "I stick pins in his picture every day." Another particularly creative fan wrote, "they should transfer the franchise to Chattahoochee [site of the Florida State Mental Hospital] and trade McKay for one of the inmates, they couldn't do any worse." A headline in a local paper asked the question many in the NFL were asking, "Is Tampa Bay Really Worst Team, or is it McKay's Incable coaching?"All of the attacks from the media, fans, fellow coaches and Johnny Carson himself boiled over when McKay angrily referred to the media as "idiots" at a press conference following a 10-0 loss to the Washington Redskins. Redskins defensive lineman Bill Brundige had piled on with the rest of the critics after the game stating, "sooner or later McKay has got to learn that his old Southern California offense won't work in this league. He's not playing Stanford now. Running from that I-formation on 3rd and 10 makes no sense."When informed of this, McKay finally snapped. "What the hell does Bill Brundige know about football? A dumb-ass tackle down on all fours probably doesn't know the offensive set and doesn't care." Turning his attention to the gathered media, an angry McKay continued, "I'm going to tell you people something and I want you to listen to me: None of you knows anything about football."Book, Hugh Culverhouse and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
