Monken will interview next week.  Why would he take the job?  Well, if it wasn't a possibility, he wouldn't be interviewing.  IMO if he was hired, it would not be Bowles guy.  It would be Licht's guy.  There would have to be some kind of assurance that if Bowles got fired after one year that Monken would not be fired.  Otherwise why would he come?  He's got a sweet job in college.  He may want to come back to the NFL, but not to just get kicked to the curb after a year.  There would have to be more job security than that, and if Bowles wants a good OC he'll have to go along with that.

No doubt Bucs underachieved this season and Bowles  is most definitely on a warm seat at the beginning of next season. Uncertainty at the QB position on top of that makes a hard sell for any OC candidate coming in.

I could see Licht bringing in a guy like Monken with a sweetened deal if Bowles gets canned he gets a shot at the HC job. Wouldn’t be the first time this has happened.

on a side note Dan Pitcher, QB coach for the Bengals, interviewed for the OC job. This is probably the most intriguing prospect. Obviously working with Burrow since he entered the league he’s also been with the Bengals since 2016. He also was a scout for the Colts. An unknown and maybe a bit green but that’s why he’s an intriguing hire lol.

When he got to the Jets HC role Bowles hired Chan Gailey as OC even though he had no real connection to him, no history.

IMO if he was hired, it would not be Bowles guy.  It would be Licht's guy.

I think Bowles wants to find the best OC possible. As an organization, they work by consensus. Would Licht override Bowles if it came to that? I don't know. I hope it doesn't come to that... But, I think a negotiation with Monken could include elevation to head coach if Bowles does not succeed. I mean, it's all pure speculation, but it's reasonable to think they have to give him something to make it worth giving up a good job at Georgia. I think Monken might make a good NFL head coach.

If I'm Bowles, I'm in survival mode.  I would go with the best OC possible and trust in Licht to get the best guy he can with whatever deal he can.  Of course you are in the interview process and you would certainly have veto power if the guy seems like a jackwagon.  But other than that...  Bowles doesn't think the predecessor was creative enough.   Well what do you think you are going to get out of a greenhorn wide receivers coach like McCardell?  It could end up being a shit show.  You better hope Licht can talk somebody serious into taking this job.

Licht was the GM when Monken was last here, so there could be a familiarity or respect.  Monken was let go with Dirk Koetter, but if there was bad blood for that Monken wouldn't be interviewing in the first place.

@catherder I read on PFT that Monken already interviewed for the OC job in Baltimore. If it came down to Tampa vs. Baltimore, you'd have to think Baltimore would be a preferable gig if Lamar Jackson is re-signed. Unless Monken has an affinity for Tampa and Jason Licht, the Bucs don't have much to offer him. One year with Brady, maybe? Not sure that would do it.

Remember that Monken was absolutely cooking with Evans and Godwin.

I'd say its pretty attractive job here, if you're a good OC that can scheme guys open and have a talented core of receivers here, and able to put up a top 10 offense that heads the playoffs youre gonna be a HC candidate in a year or 2. Make trask look good and youre a cant miss hire.

The cupboard isn't completely bare here all pro LT who is part of 4/5 solid lineman, 2 1k receivers, some talent at RB. No future qb.

I am sure coaches, like every other profession, sometimes make job changes for personal reasons like schools, retirement etc, but if we take those motivations away it’s pretty hard to sell the current Bucs as a good opportunity for an OC.

HC with warm seat already

Very uncertain QB scenario

aging offensive talent

salary cap hell.

Seems much more likely they hire someone stepping up into the role

I think Monken would very much want the job

1 - familiar with team, organization, some key players

2 - coach is on hot seat and if fired mid year, promoted to interim head coach

3 - if 2023 doesn’t work, likely top pick to get young potential franchise QB - think Lawrence, burrow success

Yes but if 2023 is really bad, Bowles and entire staff could be fired.

Good points, but he'd have to be thinking pretty long term
