So why exactly would Lovie Smith, a native Texan who went to college at Tulsa and at the time was the defensive coordinator for the St. Louis Rams, be consulted on who Cal should hire as its head football coach? That makes no sense to me. Tedford was the offensive coordinator for the best team in the Pac-10. He was a totally obvious candidate for any west coast school looking for the best head coach who wasn't already a head coach.
