Luis Perez, a DII quarterback, who did not play high school football…walked on and was the 9th QB at Southwestern – as a sophomore became the starter, in 2014 beat out nine other quarterbacks and started 11 games at for the Jaguars. Completed 67.8 percent of his passes for 1,846 yards, 18 touchdowns and just three interceptions, he transferred to Texas A&M Commerce and red-shirted in 2015.
Perez was named the starter in 2016, played in 12 games for the Lions as a junior… Completed 63 percent of his passes for 3,326 yards, 32 touchdowns and just five interceptions. He followed up his improbable junior season for the Lions by improving as a senior completing 70 percent of his passes for 4,388 yards, 42 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. in route to being named the winner of the Harlon Hill trophy as the DII player of the year.
Has prototypical size at 6-foot-3, 220 pounds, good pocket awareness to slide and maneuver in the congested confines of a muddy pocket. Good overall awareness of reading defenses pre and post snap, can thread the needle in tight windows, demonstrates good touch on deep throws, enough velocity and arms strength to make all the necessary throws at the next level.
If I am the GM of the Bucs and looking for a developmental QB, Perez would be the one player I am standing on the table for…period. He’s gritty, has a great back story of perseverance, natural leadership qualities and is just scratching the surface of his abilities.
For those wondering you can watch him live in the DII National Championship game 16 Dec on ESPN 2 against West Florida.
