My opinion is that we shouldn't be drafting Clowney or Barr with our 1st rounder. This opinion isn't based on whether they are worthy of the #7 as I believe they are, but more based on the need for our team. Do we need DE, YES however this can be done via FA while freeing up another area of need that's long eluded us, WR. My first choice would be to trade down and garner more picks however those hypotheticals rarely play out. So saying that I would do the following:Push hard to sign either Hardy or Allen in FA and use the #7 on Sammy Watkins. One could only imagine a receiving corps of Jackson, Williams and Watkins. Couple that with the perception that we will have Tedford at OC (using Martin as a receiving threat too), I think the O is instantly better. With Lovie and one of Marinelli / Frazier I believe the D is going to be much improved (could see David as the same role as Brooks when we play T2). Now is the time to get this O going.
Clowney has so much potential it would be hard to pass on him but not sure you wanna trade up for him. Watkins looks great but the hit rate on early WRs is not great.
We are already low on draft picks, so I wouldn't be interested in trading up. Unless you're trading up for a franchise quarterback, I wouldn't bet the farm. The draft is a crap shoot. If we are getting Lovie Smith as reports say we have, I feel confident he and our scouts can find some good players in the middle rounds. I also think who we currently have will play for him, ie; DaQuan Bowers, Clayborn, McCoy.
I think Bowers may turn it around. The only scenario i can see us trading for the no.2 overall pick is if we can trade Revis. Lovie Smith doesn't need Revis as much as he needs a pass rusher or QB.
With the knee and achilles Bowers doesn't have much explosiveness.
