JC Cornell, the founder of TheDraftNetwork.com, Twittered something very, very interesting last night about the Bucs’ potential offensive coordinator. He suggested fans should not be surprised if, immediately after the Super Bowl, the Bucs interview Eagles quarterback coach Brian Johnson.
(No, not that Brian Johnson. This Johnson doesn’t live in Sarasota and sing for AC/DC.)
Why is that? Well, Johnson was the offensive coordinator for current Bucs backup quarterback Kyle Trask at the University of Florida.
Joe took a peek at Johnson’s bio from the Eagles’ official website and here’s a very telling excerpt.
As the offensive coordinator [at Florida], Johnson led the Gators to the most prolific passing offense (387.6 ypg) in the FBS while ranking seventh in total offense (509.8 ypg) and eighth in scoring offense (39.8 ppg).
Under Johnson’s direction in 2020, quarterback Kyle Trask completed 301-of-437 attempts (68.9 pct.) for 4,283 yards, 43 touchdowns, eight interceptions and a 180.0 efficiency rating en route to Heisman Trophy finalist and second-team All-America honors. The senior signal caller led the entire FBS in touchdown passes and ranked second in completions and passing yards.
I like Brian Johnson, and he deserves a shot at being an OC with a really good resume. While he did have the OC title at Florida, he didn't call the plays - Dan Mullen did.
Also, Johnson has interviewed for multiple OC positions. So I'm not sure why the Bucs would have to wait until after the Superbowl to interview him. It's an odd report altogether.
The only meeting Johnson reportedly took was with the Rams prior to their decision to hire Mike LaFleur for their OC position. Contradicting that, CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones writes that Johnson has yet to take part in any interviews. Part of the reason for that, he adds, is the possibility that he could be waiting to see if the Eagles’ OC role becomes vacant after the season with Steichen being hired elsewhere. If that were to take place, Johnson, 35, would represent a logical candidate to be promoted.
In any case, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler names Johnson and Kevin Patullo as names on Philadelphia’s staff to watch closely as teams fill out their OC positions
Correct, Rams and Jets with Notre Dame lined up. He's already interviewed with teams.
Former Florida quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator Brian Johnson has interviewed for offensive coordinator roles with the New York Jets and Los Angeles Rams this offseason, according to numerous reports.
Dianna Russini of ESPN reports that the Jets also spoke with Eagles quarterbacks coach Brian Johnson this week. He’s spent the last two years in that role and was an offensive coordinator at the college level at Florida, Houston and Utah.
The Bucs are obviously waiting for something, or they'd have hired an OC right now. As for the Eagles OC job, I don't understand the logic of him not interviewing because he wants the OC job there. There is no reason that he would be precluded from interviewing elsewhere unless he's already been promised the Philly OC job.
What is it you like about him?
The Trask connection isn't compelling at all.

No. They are not waiting. OCs have options and as of now this is not a good spot to be. Glazers should have cleaned house, instead we will waste a year under Bowles and start fresh 2024. Hopefully they don’t let him select a QB in the draft. Yikes.
Well forget about Pitcher
#Bengals QBs coach Dan Pitcher will remain in Cincy for another season working with Joe Burrow, sources say. Pitcher had interviewed twice with the #Buccaneers and was considered a top candidate. Figures to be in the mix for OC jobs again next year
I would think Johnson gets promotion by Eagles
The Colts have informed other candidates they are out of the running and will try to work out a deal with Shane Steichen after the Super Bowl per @AdamSchefter
Johnson's going to be the OC in Philly and Pitcher is staying in Cincy leaving the Bucs and the always poorly run Ravens without their top choices.
Should've just kept Lefty.
He would've us a better chance at the tank job.
F Lefty. So glad we gave up our season tickets. Suck city for at least 10 years.
I'm not sure why any OC would want to come to Tampa with a lame duck HC, little offensive talent and no QB.
