The Falcons are taking quite a few hits for drafting Penix.

It's a gamble, no doubt.

And, while I wouldn't have done it, I can see the strategy. They're playing long ball.

They were in the division race until the end, with absolute dogshit play at QB.

In their minds, they've gotten infinitely better at QB and the entire coaching staff, and plan on winning the division. They don't plan drafting in the top-10 any time soon, and that's not taking into consideration the underwhelming QB class of next year.

To them, this was the best opportunity to grab their QB of the future.

Penix is a stud and can easily be a 30/10 guy, but Murphy, Turner, Latu. I think theyre wasting the prime years of a cheap qb contract, where they could have a stud roster surrounding the QB while he develops, the window is shorter. They have Cousins taking 17% of cap space when it could have been used on 2-3 different impact players with tthat 40(45?) mil. Now by the time Penix gets to start, they have to pay London,Pitts,(Bijan?) in consecutive years

I guess we should have a better running game, both from a personnel perspective and a SCHEME perspective.

Last season there was a lot of talk about the Bucs running game and for some of the more outspoken Trask fans some of the the running game woes were attributed to . .  uh . ..  Mayfield changing the play at the line to a bad run play

Coen was asked about the 2023 run game and he basically blamed the 2023 OC . ..  which is weird because he was from the same coaching tree . .right?  :-)

“Some diversity in terms of giving these guys different ways of hitting blocks, whether it’s the mid-zone, the wide one, the tight zone, duo, gap with pullers, perimeter runs — defenses are too good to say that, ‘We’re just going to line up and run a few runs,'” Coen said. “We have to give these guys a toolbox, and also, that goes along with giving them multiple plays in the huddle."

In fact . . "line up and run a few runs" . . .  was the Lefty criticism

and we have an even better Trask . . . according to That Lewis!

“He’s took a tremendous jump,” Lewis said of Trask. “You just see how he commands the huddle. You know, just small things like that go along way. He’s out there with the verbiage and his verbiage is very long. He’s commanding that; he’s handling it very well. Obviously, he got his feet wet [last season] just being the No. 2 [quarterback]. You know, just getting those reps, repetition is something you can’t make up out there on the practice field. … You see the strides that he’s taken and I’m proud of him.”

What do you mean?

We have the best QB in the league not named Mahomes.

Except for the way he changed running plays at the line . .. causing them to fail.

Oh . . and if he could just get the deep ball in his wheelhouse!

Irresistible kidding aside, it is certainly possible the Bucs are an improved team (run game, Godwin back to the slot. more organized defense etc), but still struggle to win the division.  I agree with your earlier post that people seem to underestimate the Falcons.

What are talking about?

He was undoubtedly one of, if not, the most accurate and consistently elite deep passers in the league last year.

Clearly why the national media had him as the consensus “#1 Free Agent” this offseason.

Somehow, the new Bucs OC is giving Mayfield MORE control over the offense:

"And the end of the day, we’re going to give him the pen last,” Lewis said of Mayfield. “But we want to put him in a great position to make sure he’s making the right decisions more so than the bad decisions, you know, in helping this offense.

“So we’re going to give it to him. We’re going to see what he can do. Sometimes you gotta scale it back; sometimes you can give him more. But if you don’t give it to him you don’t know. Hats off to Liam [Coen] for doing that and also trusting Baker and empowering him. You know, because the more he [knows the offense], the more the guys can lean on him, the better the offense is and you have a player-led team and the coaches can kind of fall back.”

Weird to give MORE power to your 2nd string QB?  Isnt that going to piss Trask off?

and those running game changes . . . .

we are screwed

There was so much that was wrong with the run game early on last year its not one guy. It took time for the run game develop, and it was beautiful to see us close out so many close games with 4 minutes left. Seeing an offense pound out the clock was awesome and I dont think I've ever seen a Bucs team do that, that often in one season.

agreed, not in a long time

One of many great Buc experiences was watching them win at Lambeau.  In the 4th quarter we had the lead and got the ball.  During the commercial break Caddilac Williams was dancing and pounding the ground. You knew after the tv break it was going to be run, run and run . . and you could see the Packers defense wilt.
