On Sunday, the conference championship games will be played in each of the two states where it’s now legal to smoke marijuana for recreational purposes.  And while the NFL remains steadfastly opposed to players smoking for any purpose, the league’s position eventually could be mellowing. In an extensive look at marijuana use in the NFL, Andrea Kremer of HBO’s Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel asks senior V.P. of labor law and policy Adolpho Birch whether a player who believes marijuana helps him with pain management and recovery should smoke it.“He should not use marijuana,” Birch tells Kremer in an advance copy of the broadcast, which debuts on Tuesday, January 21, at 10:00 p.m. ET.  “[H]e should consult his team physician or primary physician.  If pain management is an issue for him, they can provide him with assistance in that respect.”But what about the players who don’t want to use prescription medication, given the potential for addiction and side effects?“I wouldn’t know . . . how to respond to them other than to say that the NFL and the NFL Players Association have made a determination that marijuana is not a substance for which the exemptions for that type of use would be permitted,” Birch says.Plenty of players don’t care.  Former Broncos tight end Nate Jackson, who smoked marijuana while playing for pain-management purposes, estimates that “maybe half” of the league’s players use marijuana.  (Former NFL tackle Lomas Brown previously has pegged marijuana use by the league’s players at 50 percent.)“For me personally, very viable,” Jackson tells Kremer regarding the benefits of marijuana.  “I prefer it.  Marijuana was something that helped me, as the season wore on, my body would start to break down.  I was in a lot of pain.”It’s possible that marijuana can heal not only bodies but also brains.  Research conducted by Dr. Raphael Machoulam, described as the world’s leading expert on marijuana, has discovered the healing of brain tissue in mice given a marijuana compound.  Dr. Machoulam believes those benefits could translate to humans, too.If that can be proven, the NFL could change its tune.“I think we can engage in a lot of what if’s,” Birch said.  “That certainly is an intriguing one to hear.  Clearly, there is not something that is able to be put before us today to make it a decision that needs to be reviewed today. . . . We’ll look at anything that we think is helpful to players, consistent with our values, and able to be worked on within the context of our policy, certainly.”But the policy hasn’t been engraved on stone tablets by the hand of God.  The policy can be changed.  And as more states where NFL teams play legalize marijuana, the league’s policy looks outdated — especially since it only prohibits the “illegal use” of marijuana.Initially, the NFL shrugged at marijuana becoming legal in Colorado and Washington because it remained a controlled substance (and thus illegal) under federal law.  But as the substance gains more acceptance by the various states of the Union and in mainstream society, and as the potential benefits of the substance become better understood, the NFL’s ongoing desire to regulate player behavior away from the field that has no impact on performance eventually will look foolish. If it doesn’t already.

We as a people have been lied to about the benefits of Marijuana. This guy wrote a book that is based on research that showed how beneficial Marijuana is. Research that would have otherwise been ignored because it didn't show what they wanted it to show. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/098342618X/ref=redir_mdp_mobile/186-3047674-7164618

PROTIP marijuana has interesting chemical properties, but smoking it does not cure your cancer. Smoking it can actually give you lung cancer, but ja they "inject" the chemicals into cancer cells. Read the journals :PP

Obviously tobacco causes lung cancer, but has it ever been proven that marijuana smoke causes lung cancer? Just curious.I think the future are those E-cigarettes and E-Joints.

There are carcinogens in weed smoke. They're similar or the same  as the ones in tobacco smoke. Honestly setting anything on fire and holding it in your lungs is kind of a bad idea x)Ecigs are interesting! I like to take out the nicotine and puff vanilla and strawberry. Helps with snack cravings. As to health detriments, I don't foresee many possibilities, but you never know. Can't be worse than cigs right?

Both NFCC games are being played in states where recreational use has been legalized.

Yeah I don't think we need an official study to figure out that can't be good for you.

Yeah just a quick search gave me two studies. http://www.ersj.org.uk/content/31/2/280.short One says that it increases the risk of cancer. http://archinte.jamanetwork.com/article.aspx?articleid=410634 One says that there's no conclusive link to cancer, but they found "  an association of marijuana smoking with increased tar exposure, alveolar macrophage tumoricidal dysfunction, increased oxidative stress, and bronchial mucosal "

We are all fed, breath, and absorb plastic, co2, and radioactivity every day, when we sleep and work.Let's not kid ourselves that weed is bad. It's the least of my worries.I just think it's dumb to have it outlawed anyway, when there are soooo many other things out there that aren't being dealt with that can indeed kill.

More people have died from nail gun accidents than weed. Show me where weed is harmful in any way, at all.

Yeah it definitely shouldn't be illegal, but it's not something that I would condone doing more than once a month or so. Some stoners see it as drinking a glass of wine a day, when it's more like drinking a few shots of hard liquour.

That's nothing more than stoner propaganda. I'm sure there have been more than a few automobile accidents due to marijuana usage. Same with heavy machinery or dangerous activities like swimming. Long-term smoking will increase your chances of lung damage, if not lung cancer. Not to mention the psychological effects it has on a small percentage of the population. Marjuana is heavily linked to adolescent schizophrenia.

Even if it's used all the time, it's still nowhere close to liquor.Fact is, it's about as natural as natural gets these days. Compared to anything, even caffeine, it's not a big deal. The same government that says weed is illegal, is the same who allow aluminum zirconium and titanium dioxide in your deodorants. Allowing too much fluoride in your drinking water. They would look at it as progressive, but all I see are new ways to kill you slower. I honestly don't see why we can have drugs on the market who's side effect can be death, yet weed is illegal. It's all hypocritical.

I live in CO, there are lots of safer ways to get high rather than smoking.  The dispensaries all sell edibles, and there's always vaporizors.  There hasn't been a huge wave of crime since it became legal, unless you count the ridiculous prices the dispensaries are charging.  Forgive the pun, but the whole issue is overblown.
