Report: NFL creates panel to recommend coaching candidatesBy John Breech | CBSSports.comDecember 18, 2013 7:18 pm ETLovie-Smith_Coach_400_Zpsbc00026A.jpgLovie Smith is a top minority coaching candidate, according to a new NFL panel. (USATSI) After the 2012 NFL season, the 32 teams in the league combined to hire 14 new head coaches and general managers. Despite the presence of the Rooney Rule, which requires teams to interview at least one minority candidate for a head coaching job, no minority coaches were hired. The NFL doesn't want that happen to again, so the league has assembled a panel of eight former coaches and general managers to help identify the top minority coaching candidates, according to Sports Illustrated's Peter King. Members of this Career Development Advisory panel include Bill Polian, Tony Dungy, Ron Wolf and John Madden and the group was asked to put together an inclusive list of candidates, with a special emphasis on minorities. With at least one NFL head coaching job already open in Houston, the panel quickly finalized its list of top minority candidates. According to King, those candidates include: former Bears coach Lovie Smith, Baltimore offensive coordinator Jim Caldwell, Chicago defensive coordinator Mel Tucker, Browns defensive coordinator Ray Horton and Cardinals defensive coordinator Todd Bowles.Any NFL team with a head coaching vacancy will have access to the list. The panel's list also includes minority candidates from the college ranks like Louisville coach Charlie Strong and Vanderbilt coach James Franklin. NFL assistants Hue Jackson (Cincinnati), Winston Moss (Green Bay), Darren Perry (Green Bay), Eric Studesville (Denver) and Karl Dorrell (Houston) were also listed. The panel also listed several non-minority candidates. The non-minority list includes: Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, Saints offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael and Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden.

This is a problem that the league only seems to make worse.

Discrimination in the name of equality is getting to be more and more blatant.

This is so stupid. Did the NFL stop to think that maybe none of them were hired because the employers thought someone else might be a better coach for their team?If you can coach football, you can coach football. Until THAT changes, stop with all the other stuff.

TBH, it's none of the NFLs business who any team hires at any position. Period. The "NFL" is acting like a branch of ESPN...

How many people on that list is gay?I think it is outrageous that there are no openly gay HC's in the league. Call it the Brendon rule.

Why aren't there women coaches too?  That's not fair.

It depends if they are recommending HC hires.Or "RECOMMENDING" HC hires.Either way its something the league should stay out it.  Its like RG II, telling Dan Schneider who the HC should be for RG III.

Ridiculous. If there was an issue with racism don't you think there would be an all white team or an all black team and so on? If you can play you get drafted. If you can coach you get HC position. Errrrrr wait... Maybe the Glazer's are racist after all!

My office is about 80% african-american and every single one of them agreed that this is offensive. The NFL needs to stop trying to be "anti-racist" because they just look like a bunch of racists.
