who's defense it was that called an all out blitz with 25 seconds left, from their own 35 yard line to that allowed L.A to get into position to kick the game winning FG as time expired...For the record I love that our defense is/was aggressive, but when they have to march it 50 yards to get into FG range with 25 seconds keep everything in front of you and try to keep them from being able to get out of bounds( foreshadowing poor decisions when game is on the line )
NOT criticizing this point of view, just pointing out that its very common in football to describe the game as turning on one play when in reality its not really that way.
We dont score a TD in that game until the very end of the 3rd quarter, I think? Brady throws a pick right before half too that should give the Rams ANOTHER td, so we are lucky not to be down 27- 6? and we do go down 27 to 6 right quickly in the 2nd half. Then I think we had two series where we had to go for it on 4th down and fail
Brady throws the ball almost 60 times? The point is that we are just outmatched in the game overall. The offense in the first half basically punt punt fg punt tunover.
So the blitz (I think the Rams are on the 50?, maybe not) is a pivotal play and in hindsight it definitely does NOT work out, but BLITZING is that way, live and DIE by it. That said, I dont know why that call then either. Its 1st and 10 near midfield, so maybe the thought is to end the game right there? The Rams are no timeouts. I think? So, IF IT WORKS Bowles is lauded as a GENIUS for calling an unexpected blitz in that scenario that basically ends the game, but Live/DIE and we died on that play BUT the game was lost well before that.
Recall that we were averaging 30 pts a game or something like that. We had 6 most of the game
As for a possible DC, how about Brandon Staley ? He's "Assistant HC" and an unspecified defensive coach for the 9ers that's coaching this year as a freebie courtesy of the Chargers. He runs a hybrid attacking 3-4 that has generally been very good. He likely won't get much interest as a HC during the offseason, so will likely be looking for opportunities to re-establish himself in the coaching ranks, and Coen is familiar with him from their overlapping year in L.A.
That’s a good call, and could happen.
@bucsshot420 Thats the thing, you tell me it’s Bowles, then you tell me the talent that’s missing & needed in order to fix the defense? That means you know the real problem. It’s not Bowles, it’s not having the talent.
There aren’t a lot of DC’s floating around that were capable of holding Mahomes to 9 points…in a SB.
DC’s capable of doing that, don’t forget how to build a defense, or coach a defense. They just need a few pieces to be better than average.
Could be you’re right. Maybe you have some DC in mind that could take over a roster built on a hybrid 3-4 that are either available or looking for a lateral move to Tampa? or maybe d-line/LB-er’s/secondary coaches looking for a promotion to DC? I haven’t been looking for them so I don’t have a list of names for those guys. It could possibly work, I just haven’t been paying attention.
It's a combination of Bowles stubbornness and poor game management as HC, as a DC it's sticking by "his guys", and the refusal to adapt the defensive to his guys strengths, as well as running so much zone coverage... This year it's Britt and JTS...Last year it was White and Neal...Injuries certainly have not helped this year as several key players have missed some time, but the majority of the of the players on the defensive side have played in and have been "communicating with each other" in this defense for at least 2 seasons. You're right that most DC's haven't held Mahomes to 9 points let alone in a Superbowl, but lets not act as if going against was it 3 backup OL ? Didn't make it easier for Suh,JPP,Shaq and co. to disrupt the Chiefs offense.....I agree they don't forget how to build or coach a defense, but sometimes the game simply passes them by.....such as with Lovie, Leslie Frasier, Jim Bates, Mike Smith
Let's also move ahead 1 year in the divisional round against the rams, and who's defense it was that called an all out blitz with 25 seconds left, from their own 35 yard line to that allowed L.A to get into position to kick the game winning FG as time expired...For the record I love that our defense is/was aggressive, but when they have to march it 50 yards to get into FG range with 25 seconds keep everything in front of you and try to keep them from being able to get out of bounds( foreshadowing poor decisions when game is on the line )

@bucshot420 I think the 9-er’s made him an assistant HC to ward-off teams - he’s an interesting option - he’s also been a head coach for the Chargers, and the 9ers have a winning record.
One of the reasons he’s doing well may be that the defense is absolutely stocked with defensive talent.
Also, looking at an article from about a year ago, he was 4-4 before being fired - and then this article from last month:
late game decision making was being called into question a year ago, then this year he does weird things like drop Nick-freaking-Bosa into coverage?
Sound familiar? In this case, though, it is NOT because he doesn’t have an supreme Edge, he DOES, he just keeps making weird decisions that drove Charger fans, and now 9ers fans, crazy?
It’s a small sample size, but it’s pretty consistent.
My point is, let’s don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater. Staley has a loaded defensive roster this season, and they somewhat underperformed. And, Bowles hasn’t given up 63 points against the Raiders, yet…like Staley’s defense did, last season. I can’t forget that game.
If the Bucs DON’T go on the late-season run we all think they should - and this defense does NOT play at least average in those games - you could very well be right about the Bucs looking for a new way forward on defense. We just have to get the right guy. I’m not sure Brandon Staley fits the bill.

I wouldn’t mind it.
Coen (HC/OC) and Staley (DC).
Only pointing this out to highlight the “grass is always greener” approach. Staley’s coaching career includes some controversy over his in-game decision making, lol, including his use of a timeout.
“Staley came under scrutiny for two decisions during the game. The first involved a failed fourth down conversion on the Chargers' own 18-yard line, giving the Raiders a short field, which they would score on to extend their lead to six. The second was calling a timeout with 38 seconds left in the overtime period with the Raiders at the Chargers' 39-yard line. Staley claimed he called the timeout to get the right defensive personnel on the field as the Raiders were running the ball.”
Does the football nitwit think the DC makes decisions on when to go for it on fourth down, etc.?
This fuggin’ guy is too stupid and shameless to insult.

Looks like he should use his interlock ignition device on his computer, as well as his motor vehicle.

@White Tiger
If you do search on Staley the only official title he has is "Assistant HC" his other capacity is as an "unspecified defensive coach" I'm sure thats so that he doesn't lose money from the Chargers buy out. Nick Sorenson is the Defensive Coordinator in SF. so if there is some weird shit going on with coverages etc. then that's his final call not Staley's. Staley's last year as a DC was 2020 in LA which his Rams D gave up 296 points (fewest in the NFL) for reference we gave up 355 that year, and only allowed an average of 281 total yards per game (second behind Baltimore) for comparison sake Tampa ranked 6th that year. Keep in mind I'm not in any way using this information as a way to paint Bowles in a negative light during our SB year, I'm just using those rankings to compare a potential replacement DC to what we had the same year ourselves.
@Blayton Cligsby
As was previously stated DC does not make decisions on when to go for it on 4th down nor does he call T.O thats strictly HC and player on the field.
As for other aspects of possibilities for Defensive staff assistant coaches next year if current assistants were not retained, during that 2020 run with the Rams Joe Barry is available and was the LB coach that year, also available are Eric Henderson(DL coach), and Aubrey Pleasant (Passing game coordinator/CB coach)
Staley's last year as a DC was 2020 in LA which his Rams D gave up 296 points (fewest in the NFL)
with coaches there is always the question of credit to coaches or players that defense has the best defensive player in the nfl (Donald) and an all-pro corner and more he was basically taking over a pretty good defensive unit
Under your hypothetical, our new DC probably needs 1-2 edge rushers, and 2 new ILBs, a safety and at least one corner.
still, interesting idea
Denver taking Atlanta to the woodshed.
Must be nice to have a good HC.

That's definitely a fair assessment...having superstars definitely makes a coordinators job much easier for sure...but there's also an argument that good coaches put their superstars in position to succeed.
As for next year (regardless of who is DC) Tampa will need a bookend OLB for YaYa...I also doubt David will return as he's clearly lost a step this year so yes 2 MLB will need to be found somewhere....I think we're pretty solid with 3 safeties between whitehead ,Edwards, and AWJ plus merriweather coming off the bench and Wisdom on the PS...and I think another CB would be beneficial as Dean can't be relied on to stay on the field and may very well be shown the door ala CD24 this past offseason...these are the realities regardless of who's here.. these all go back to adaptability and playing to your players strengths while masking their deficiencies.
While I know that Licht buys the groceries...it'd be foolish to think that Bowles doesn't give his stamp of approval before a player (especially on the defense) is drafted....so the fact that of all of our ILB's on the team minus Dennis, and Vi are all very similar in skills to Britt falls at least in part falls on Bowles....and the fact that Vi hasn't been coached up and gotten more practice looks to get him up to speed (especially as many weeks as it's been since Dennis' injury) falls squarely on Bowles and Larry Foote.

2023 #7 scoring defense. . the stat that matters!
Bowles' leg humpers drinking tons of copium today.
Straight up guzzling it.

or, just that they haven't put anything into the position
Vi - UFA
Britt - 5th round
Grier - UFA
The state of the LB position is one of the biggest reason some would say the Bucs are focused on finances over players, still. But, as some have said here we passed on an LB in the draft when we took a WR, so yes to your point I doubt Bowles was pounding on the table. Licht seems to be a good partner for HCs.
