NFL Rookies Stuck In Bad Situations By Eric Wagner August 19, 2014 11:43 pm Players are often picked to fill holes, but players are oftentimes thrown into an unfavorable circumstance. Johnthan Banks, the Buccaneers' 2013 second-round pick, was counted on to to start from the get-go. While he has plenty of potential, he was not ready to start right away, and struggled for most of the year. Without the pieces around them, even the most talented rookies will have trouble. Some players do not even get to start because the position is not (yet) a weakness. Multiple first-round picks from last year did not start, including Dion Jordan, the third player taken in the draft. Which players from the 2014 NFL Draft are in a bad situation for their rookie year?
Demarcus Lawrence, Cowboys Defensive End Draft Position: Round 2, Pick 2DeMarcus Ware has departed, and second-round pick, Demarcus Lawrence, will replace him. While the rookie is not expected to be as great as Ware, they will expect him to still do well. The secondary is well below average, while their best linebacker is out, and their defensive line is unproven. Lawrence is very talented, but also raw. The rookie will have a lot of trouble finding success in his first year.
Charles Sims, Buccaneers Running Back Draft Position: Round 3, Pick 5Third-round picks are not usually expected to make big impacts, but Charles Sims will have some trouble getting playing time. He broke his ankle earlier in the year and is expected to miss at least half of the regular season, but the main issue is the depth at the position. If Doug Martin plays like how he did as a rookie, he will be the starter for a long time, while Mike James showed plenty of potential as a spell back. Bobby Rainey, who filled in for both last year, has also played well. Even in a year or two, it is hard seeing Sims as the number two back.
Ja'Wuan James, Dolphins Offensive TackleDraft Position: Round 1, Pick 19Ja'Wuan James was considered a reach by many, but he will only have to deal with secondary edge rushers. He will line up on the right side, as opposed to Brandon Albert lining up as the left tackle. The problem will be that the offensive line is still very weak. Mike Pouncey is expected to miss a big chunk, if not all, of the season, while the guard positions have not been filled. With the pressure coming, James will have a hard time keeping Ryan Tannehill upright.
Calvin Pryor, Jets Safety Draft Position: Round 1, Pick 18The Jets' group of cornerbacks was considered a weakness last year, and their only addition was Dimitri Patterson. Dee Milliner will look to step up, but Kyle Wilson is average at best, while rookie Dexter McDougle will likely miss the whole season. Calvin Pryor will be responsible for containing the big plays. If either corner is beat, he will receive some of the blame. If the cornerback play does not improve tremendously, Pryor will be in for a disappointing rookie year.
Blake Bortles, Marqise Lee, and Allen RobinsonBlake Bortles, QB: Round 1, Pick 3Marqise Lee, WR: Round 2, Pick 7Allen Robinson, WR: Round 2, Pick 29When three rookies are expected to start and lead an offense, you are going to be in for a rough season. While they all have plenty of promise, they are all also projected to start, or get extensive playing time, in their first year. With a below average offensive line, decent running back, they will certainly struggle to move the ball. Cecil Shorts is the best player on this offense, and he has had constant issues with injuries and inconsistencies.link
