In my mind we have to find someone that is under the Shanahan or McVay tree.  For multiple reasons.  They have all been successful across the NFL… AND, Bowles can’t stop their offenses, so maybe he can learn a little something from them inhouse?  The most important coaching position in the NFL now is the guy that is running your offense.

I’d go grab Jake Peetz, the Rams Pass Game Specialist.  He just plain gets guys open.  It doesn’t matter who is playing receiver or TE, he schemes guys open.  Don’t go get Alex Van Pelt or Ken Dorsey (who luckily just got picked up).  Don’t re-invent the wheel.  Get guys that are making it happen right now in the league.

I’d like Peetz, but I’m thinking they’re going to go all-in on our journeyman QB and hire AVP to get him to stay in Tampa.

Does AVP have a prior connection to Mayfield? Browns, I think?

Thats a good point. If the Bucs were committed to Mayfield (all signs yes) when Canales ejected, it would make since then to bring in a Mayfield choice for OC (the reason I had previously mentioned thad lewis was same offense and knows Mayfield).

Not sure that Mayfield effectively choosing the OC is the best thing FOR THE BUCS on the football field. . as much as its the best thing for season ticket sales lol because from a TICKET SALES PERSPECTIVE Mayfield back should = Evans back should = playoff run (even if it might not)

He was the Browns OC and called the plays vs the Yinzers in the playoff game Stefanski spent in his basement

If you'll recall they were a goal line funble into the endzone from beating KC after knocking Mahomes out of the game only to lose it with a Joe Woods defense

@donkey_hunter - I’d prefer Peetz over AVP. The guy is a wizard. He’d bring the best out of our passing game.

Oh, I know. As would I.

But, as I mentioned, the FO appears to be all in on our journeyman QB; so I’ll expect AVP to be hired for the sake of “familiarity”.

Even if Peetz would bring a better offensive scheme.

Agreed with the subject line. Its a much modern day offense that uses motion that helps out the QB's a ton. Peetz should be the #1 option as it'll bring familiarity to a passing scheme we just implanted under Canales. Except this guy will dictate play calling sequencing, game-planning weekly, and etc..

@detrimental - agreed. Scheme is 50% of everything now.  It’s all X’s and O’s, not the Tommy’s and the Joe’s. Different QBs’ careers are made or broken by scheme alone right now. You see teams that have receivers running wide open on Sundays and other teams that struggle to scheme up open receivers on the regular.

100%

Mahomes is on is way to repeat with an aging Kelce and a bunch of nobodies. He obviously has a top 3 defense in the NFL but the point remains, he's shredded up some of the best defenses even without a true #1. Another example, is the kid Jordan Love from Green Bay. No bonafide #1 WR for that team yet still generated success as a passer due to scheme. Would anybody take the Texans WR core or Ravens WR core over what we currently have? Stroud and Jackson were neck and neck as MVP candidates.

Precisely to add to my point, bring in Peetz plz.

Yeah, unfortunately Bowles seems to have his lips surgically attached to Mayfield's posterior (4-7 and he was still going with him, and it barely paid off). I just don't see AVP being anything other than ho-hum. Peetz would bring more continuity whether or not we keep Mayfield as the scheme would essentially be the same. If we were to go "different" then Brian Johnson is the route to go there. In either case, I'm pretty sure the odds favor Todd screwing the pooch here, but we'll see.

And I still feel a coaching addition from the Shanahan or McVay tree could help Bowles and his staff figure out some strategies to slow down these offenses. It can’t hurt, because we look lost when we play against these offenses.

Yea i agree with poster above. Hopefully they get a guy with a more modern approach. Maybe he can take over if Bowles isn't improving his decision making. Hopefully they get key guys back. I think that's just as important as who they pick for oc.

Peetz has flipped jobs almost every season. Some just lateral moves.

why is no one keeping him?

Johnson staying in Detroit is a big domino because that means that Washington and Seattle may go for defensive candidates for their HC search which may leave more options for the Bucs for OC.
