Recurring posts about the Bucs’ offensive struggles.  Is it the offense and rookie OC or is it player execution?  PR gives some insight. Admittedly a small sample size because it is just the first half of the Bills, but based on PR’s analysis the problem is primarily EXECUTION.

https://www.pewterreport.com/film-week-8-bucs-offense-bills-first-half/

Interesting article, but here are the snippets:

PLAY CALLING COMMENTARY:

a man-beater that got multiple receivers open”

“a “dog” concept with Chris Godwin  . .  put vertical stress on the outside corner . . . and opened Evans up on what would have been a 20-yard pass.”

out-of-the-box play call that gained 14 yards on a Godwin end around.”

EXECUTION COMMENTARY:

Play call was good. Structure was good (Evans open). Execution killed what would have been a big gain”

Then the snowball began. . . A false start penalty”

“Palmer slipping and Deven Thompkins blowing his block”

“left guard Aaron Stinnie tripped coming off of his double team”

“Kieft lets his mark go by and White gets a minimal gain.”

“a botched shotgun snap”

The article goes on mostly like that. There is a generalized critique of sequencing and a critique of one play call, but overall the focus is mostly on execution killing drives, including the inconsistent execution of Mayfield and penalties.

The article even points out the RELATIVE success in the running game, often undercut by execution problems, like Palmer's second downfield hold.

Follow up article covering the second half.  Recall the first drive is critical because the defense gave up a TD so down two scores

PASS - "Dave Canales opened the first drive of the second half with a play action call with a “Wolf” route combination designation (the slot receiver running a deep corner route over a short out from the outside receiver). The call would have produced an open receiver between tight end Payne Durham and receiver Mike Evans putting vertical stress on cornerback Dane Jackson  BUT . . .Cade Otton missed his split zone block "

(Mayfield scrambled for a first)

RUN - 2 yard gain because ""poor blocking from left guard Aaron Stinnie and center Robert Hainsey"

RUN - 3 yard gain - "follow-up play was a mid-zone run with a potentially fantastic backside crease, but right guard Cody Mauch was unable to time up his climb to the second-level defender"

PASS ---  "On third-and-5 the Bucs had a good play-call dialed up to beat man coverage which got Trey Palmer open on a slant/stop"  BUT . . "Mayfield  . . bailed from a clean pocket and was only able to gain two yards on the scramble."

For those who wondered whether Chase Edmonds might give the run game a spark, check out the video of one of his runs from the goal line lol

To be fair he's just back from injury but man . . .

Bowles told WFLA-TV sports chief Dan Lucas that more of those (dump offs) to White should soon get defenses to bring down defenders to cover or slow White.

It's player personnel.

Why it Kieft on the roster let alone in the game?

Why is Thompkins blocking?

Why isn't Stinne starting?

Why is Vaughn playing?

The execution is bad, the play calling sucks (especially running) and then we have players doing things they don't do well

It's not like Canales doesn't know what plays are possible. He's been on the sidelines for the Seahawks for years.  He just doesn't have the personnel to run them.   I don't know what anybody thought, fans or coaches, when they put Mauch in there.  He's coming from ND State and switching positions.  They plug him right in there as a starter.  What did they think was going to happen?  How many other starting guards in the league have that lack of experience?  I'd venture to say none.  Probably very few in the history of the modern NFL have been thrown into the starting job like that.

Those are good questions.  "Cat" Vaughn should be on another team's practice squad right now.  When are they going to make changes?  "Not at this time."  That's all we know.

there is a preseason article by PR calling Otton the “Swiss Army knife” for Canales

he is not lol

he us actually a big part of the problem, at least at this moment.

the point is that the plays called by Canales are getting people open and even creating holes in the running game. The players are not executing

Canales isn’t blameless but his offense and his philosophy works

As Canales said in his press conference there are no quick fixes for the Bucs offense. He needs to shot everyone out and stay the course.  He deviated from that against the Falcons and we lost. May have lost anyways but he should’ve stuck with it in a game that was close

Bowles has some overpaid non-producers on his defense so he needs to get them in order too

Just who is running the offense?  Something happened after the Vikings game. The offense looked crisp and creative. Since then it is boring. It is the BL offense. It’s dead. I’m hearing two different lines of thought and the are contradictory. On the one hand we’re told this is a complicated offense. On the other hand we’re told the Oline is just learning. This is mid season. By now someone should know something about this offense. I do agree that the OC is more of a motivational speaker who knows how to turn a phrase, but he was hired to win games. Surely there are plays to run that dummies on offense can learn.

Somebody does know this offense, unfortunately it is the opposing defenses that know the Bucs offense.

The frustration is real! And understandable.

it’s not just knowing the plays, it’s playing. So, Mauch learning through experience how quickly he needs to get off a double team and too the next level. Otton learning through experience that he’s supposed to hit a guy in the other color lol.

the offense works, when executed properly. We’ve even showing some life in the run game recently. Maybe the offense is getting close?

John McKay did say that he was all in favor of the execution.

Reporter: "What do you think of your team's execution Coach?"

McKay: "I'm in favor of it!"

From the Bills game, I don't understand there was not a third down on their side that Diggs was not on the field. On the other had there were a number of 3rd downs for us that both Evans and Godwin were on the bench with the rookies on the field. Why?
