let‘s give them a chance …you never know.
but at first sight … could be low grade as well

According to this analysis the Bucs definitely went for value in this draft.
I think this was a great draft. Not flashy, but what we needed, and some depth at key positions.
Good draft. I like our CB depth heading into the year. We are strong at CB/WR/DE now so when injuries happen we arent trotting out bunch of udfas
Yeah strong at the skill positions. Depth along DL and OL may be iffy still but it also depends upon if several young players develop. If Klein, Haggard, Opeta, Brewer and Roberts show up this is very good news for this team over a 17 game season.
All things considered, I thought this was a good draft.
A few of these picks, albeit have some noticeable risk, have the potential to pay big dividends.
It's the kind of draft you hope to see from your team, even if it is a little frustrating from a short term view.
everything I read about our first round pick suggests a "can't miss" type pick, even if not really an immediate need. The other picks seem to adhere to desire for productive, character guys. Value picks, another description.
only time will tell
The evolution of Licht . . .
"“It was about five years ago, you know, we weren’t having the success I wanted in the drafts. Kind of had a pow wow, got together, just all of us, the whole staff, talking about, what are the picks that have made it? What are the picks in the history of the Bucs that have made it? It was the person.”
"“So what were the qualities of the person?” Licht asked rhetorically. The goal was to strive for a player who embodied Lavonte David’s character and ability. That was the new model.
“You know, we put the players that are worthy of being drafted on the draft board,” Licht said. “We kind of take the @ssholes and the dou#%bags off and guys that don’t love football and guys [who] have proven that they don’t like [football]. They’re difficult to deal with.”
I'm still not crazy about the first pick. Perhaps he will make me eat my words after a few years. My grade overall is a B-, or perhaps C. Like another poster commented, perhaps the Bucs have added depth if other young players already on the team develop. As with all drafts, time will tell.
Wow that sounds easy. Just draft the guys with good character! But of course it isn't. How do you really identify guys with character vs. guys who are just for show. That statement certainly gives us more insight into why Licht has been so successful. I'm sure he doesn't want to toot his own horn so he's framing it as just a decision that was made, but to be able to actually do it, to identify high character guys who's game will translate into the NFL game and the NFL locker room, that takes a level of knowledge and intuition on the part of Licht that comes from experience and just being good at his job.The evolution of Licht . . .

Definitely difficult, but very important. I think the Bucs do it by looking for some basic traits like team captains and production, but also by interviews and and lot of talking with coaches and other players. Even then they obviously have misses, but at least they are trying to narrow the scope of the misses by looking beyond just measurables. Kudos to them.
Licht says "it was about five years ago." That is probably just a rough recollection, but it is interesting because of Devin White. Devin White's primary issue is/was his character and specifically that he does NOT love football. Lots of physical skills, but not the kind of guy Licht is focused on now. ironically, Bruce Arians specifically said that White was the right pick because he loved football. Maybe White was the turning point, but he was playing well in 2020 season, obviously, so maybe not.
More recently, the Bucs sort of questioned McMillan's character a bit early last season. He responded well, but then they went big at WR this draft. Imperfect process for sure. Either way though the picks this year seem to suggest they have an actual method and are sticking with it.
When you get old five years is really fuzzy. "When did we buy that refrigerator? Wasn't it about five years ago? Oh, it was 2003." But I'm looking at the Wirfs/Winfield draft that he probably can say that high character and football professionalism was important to the success of those two players, although they were need positions as well. Let's not mention the following draft which showed that character isn't everything (See JTS). But White wasn't a bad guy or disliked, but he didn't have the professionalism to take his raw ability and turn it into a great player.Wow that sounds easy. Just draft the guys with good character! But White wasn't a bad guy or disliked
Spytek signed him to the Raiders calling him a "great guy' who had "the best playoff run" he's seen
White might be a great guy, but the character aspect that Licht highlights is love of football. Probably White's last act.
Btw, if LVD gets into the HOF (hope he does) I hope they point out that his GM viewed him as the standard bearer of his draft philosophy change. What an incredible compliment.
It's easy to find out about a player's character. College coaches will tell you. Hell, some college weight rooms even post who is late, misses and loafes in workouts and tapes it on the door for scouts to see.
As for the draft, I wish there was more emphasis on edge rushers. Maybe Mike Green didn't pass Licht's character rubric but that MF'er has insane pass rush traits and I think he could have had 12, 14, 16 sacks for us THIS YEAR.
