I don't think the lack of Godwin catches is due to the scheme, as much as the QB not going to him.

This is fairly obvious to most.

bwhahaha

What I'm saying is that there's no effort to get Godwin the ball on a consistent basis. They're running him out wide and there's very few designed plays for him.

He knows that lol. Its just that he's pinned himself in (and DH with him) , so. now he's being obtuse

of course the scheme matters. EVEN CANALES IMPLIES AS MUCH

with some here everything is weirdly about having a SINGULAR boogeyman . . . in football of all things. lol

Last year it was Leftwich even as the DEFENSE got crushed n the playoffs by the Cowboys (ie the team was NOT that good)

This year we put almso ZERO into improving  (by design) but it cant be the OC again . . so. its' all just Mayfield now?  Even when we lost a game where the offense put up 37 and yesterday nearly the worst team in football ran ove us for 150 yards?

But . . . its mayfield  . .  missing Godwin . . EVEN WITH THE OC SUGGESTING HE NEEDS TO DO MORE TO GET GODWIN INVOLVED (ie the scheme)

Hilarious.. like a case study on the brain

Oh Biggs. You'll never change.

You got that right. I certainly won't be changing how I post just because it rubs your labia majora raw.

I'm not saying I liked Lefty offense.

I get that, and I've never lumped you that group of Lefty defenders.

Posted by: @firebowles2023

I mean we literally ran that play for Chase Edmonds yesterday...

Yes, it's ok for an OC to call a screen for a back-up RB. It happens all over the NFL.

Posted by: @firebowles2023

I'm not saying I want that many screen passes.

You're calling for more plays to be specifically designed to Godwin. There aren't that many pass plays that are drawn up for one specific person. A screen is one of the few. So how many do you want?

You're both bitching about predictable play calls while also calling for predictable play calls. It's quite the spectacle.

Posted by: @firebowles2023

That doesn't mean I want Lefty's vanilla screen over and over but that play makes sense to run to him once or twice a game on early downs for sure.

If Canales, or any OC, ran a WR screen to the same player multiple times a game - they would get lambasted. And rightly so. Do you see Kyle Shannahan running the same WR screen to Deebo Samuel multiple times a game in every game? No.  No, you don't. It's the definition of predictable.

And FTR, you keep confusing "route tree" with "route combos" in these discussions. The tree consists of 9 routes.  The combo is use of those routes within a specific play, and hopefully that combo works well together against whatever defensive alignment is out there.

Bottom line is Godwin either needs more targets or we can't pay him 20m/year. It's not worth the cap space.

I think we can all agree we want him involved in the offense.

The best way to do that is to put him in the slot, imo.

Whether it's a bubble screen or something else, Godwin, imo, needs 2-3 plays designed for him.

The sweep on 3rd and 2 was a great play call... overloaded the left side and went right.

And as I've said, I'd wager his targets are down because of injuries and Baker not getting to him in the progression. So the question becomes, where is Godwin in the order of those reads?

He doesn't seem to be first most of the time, but it even seemed like he was 3rd behind Palmer yesterday (again speculation and again could be the injury).

But we cannot invest 20m/year for him to have these sub-5 target games over and over... Canales should not be getting more touches to Edmonds than Godwin. That's the bottom line.

Based on how Canales reacted again recently, I think it's fairly certain that some of these plays are designed with Godwin as the first or second progression on his side of the field. I got the distinct impression, especially since you can see it every week on the All 22, that Godwin is there to be hit, and Baker's not doing it. I've seen a number of plays this season where Godwin was so wide open he was throwing up his hands imploring the pass to come his way without effect. I don't for certain know why Baker won't go to him more, but I suspect it's because he's operating more on the sidelines and intermediate middle where a QB has to watch the accuracy or risk a pick 6, especially the out routes. He just seems like he's much more comfortable throwing outside the hash marks 20+ yards down field or dumping it off inside of 10 yards.

I'll be bluntly honest here. If you want to see Godwin get more involved, put Trask in. He's just a better progression reader who just needs to adjust his timing to NFL speed, which requires time playing. He had no issues spreading the ball all over the field to every receiver out there during the preseason. He looks for who should be open and throws it if there. Baker just plays with too much of a sandlot mentality. He looks like he's trying to play like Favre, to be honest. Virtually every pass is a rocket without the kind of touch that an upper tier QB has.

We've got him running out routes over and over. CBs don't respect him deep and we aren't letting him sit in the slot as much and sit down in zone.

Sorry. But this is simply not true.

that Godwin is there to be hit, and Baker's not doing it.

...and the film confirms it. It's been that way all year.

That being said, it has progressively gotten worse over the season.

Just finished the Q1 - Q3 of yesterday's game (All-22), and Godwin is open NUMEROUS times. And, Baker either throws an errant pass, or just looks him off. Can't recall the exact time stamp of the play, but there's one that's so egregious, it's laughable.

Has Palmer on a shallow crosser, with Godwin on an intermediate crosser (Otton motions right pre-snap, bringing the LB with him). Both, are open initially and well into the route. Godwin is WIDE open 2nd level, and Baker looks at him right from the snap. Then, he simply looks off him to Evans (who ironically enough was WIDE open on a hitch), only to throw it at his feet.

THREE WIDE OPEN RECEIVERS, minimal pressure, and shits the bed.

You can see from the progressions and concepts, that Godwin is primarily a 2nd read (behind Evans...which it should be that way).

One thing I'll point out, is watch Godwin on posts and digs. They looked awfully "lazy" at times. Looked sloppy and uninspired. Not sure if it's injury-related or just frustration.

-------

Regardless, Canales has room to grow. Especially from the sequencing perspective.

But, these guys are being schemed open. FAR MORE than last year. Not even close.

Unfortunately, we're handcuffed with mediocre QB play.

Yeah, this offense is getting guys open so often that a competent passer would be driving the ball down field on virtually every drive. The offense needs work in the red zone, but, again, some of that might be the QB. At this point, I think Baker is one of those QB's that is so emotionally invested that he just can't let the bad plays go and it sticks with him and he just gets worse over time. Basically the only thing that explains how he can keep failing to throw to wide open receivers.

I know one thing, in college Trask never let bad passes stick with him. He just kept going out there and firing away. I don't know if he can continue that in the NFL, but I suspect he can, and we saw what he did in the preseason with poor pass protection throwing to guys that weren't always all that open. I can only imagine what he might be able to do with the starters. Maybe one day we'll find out? It just gets me that Todd hasn't been told yet that the organization wants to know if Kyle is the guy before the season ends, as this draft will be huge for us in the rebuild, and not having to draft a QB gives us all kinds of flexibility. We know Baker ain't the guy. Let's move on Todd!

I posted something similar a few weeks ago.

An average to good QB in this system would have 3,000+ passing yards at this point (pacing for over 4,000) and probably somewhere in the neighborhood of 22-24 TD's.

Imagine a good to great QB in this system!

While it's not likely to happen (as I think the entire coaching staff is gone in a month or so), but I'd love to see one more season of Canales and a new QB.

One of the few things Todd has gotten right is the OC, considering the circumstances. I think, given another year, Canales could have a dynamic offense, especially if he gets his sequencing down (he's gotten better, but still goes through some stretches that make me think Todd's whispering in his ear "run it more").

Yeah.

The situational play calling and sequencing definitely needs work.

But, these are growing pains I'd expect from a rookie OC.

Canales doesn’t need the HC in his ear to run the ball more
