Par for the course, right there. The DB was all over Palmer. A good QB recognizes that the match-up isn't good from the start and immediately goes to the next progression where he would have seen Godwin coming open. Of course, an elite QB would see the how tight the DB is from the snap and would already be paying attention to where the safety is (he's backing up to cover deep - where Baker knows, or should, that Godwin will be coming over the middle on an intermediate route), and immediately throwing to the anticipated spot. Brady would make this pass to Godwin all day, every day. I'm becoming more and more convinced that Baker just doesn't read defenses well and isn't great at anticipation throws. But I know someone who is...

Yessir. It happens multiple times per game, and not just for Godwin. And it's been happening all season.
The QB has been holding the offense back, even with all that moxie and mobility.

If you look at this highlighted play and the comments that exist in other threads it's pretty interesting BECAUSE Godwin in the slot matched up against an LB.
also, the context because clearly mayfield is locked in as many have posted here (its 2nd and 10) BUT the very nmext play is the long pass to Evans that lead to a. TD.
So, its a great example of
1) the hit/miss nature of Mayfield. - agreed by everyone here
2) the difference between Evans and Godwin
3) the SCHEME getting Godwin open (denied but some here lol)
4) Canales bringing Godwin inside

Great callout by Fire.
RBT (mainly Michael Pless) posts these a lot (as does Queipo and Ledyard).
But, this is honestly nothing new. It’s been happening all season long. The Lions game might be the worst I’ve seen this year.
Canales is scheming these guys open. Only the drunken Lefty Leg Humper argues it.
Why Baker can’t process these reads are beyond me.
Why Baker can’t process these reads are beyond me.
It looks to me like he's making his mind up pre-snap where he's going with the ball too often and doesn't read anything post-snap.

He's not reading unless/until the play breaks down. He does that all the time
Winston was very similar, throwing picks though because he wasn't correctly reading he defense or the play as it progerssed
Maybe Baker can't see the middle of the field because of his height?
Better visibility out wide so he just misses the middle.
Or fear of being tipped
That doesn't excuse not making the proper reads pre snap. Post snap might be an issue for Mayfield to see the entire field but pre snap reads are crucial to Canales offensive scheme.
Canales scheme is designed to scheme players open for YAC opportunities. Mike Evans has been a great beneficiary of this but there are other players on the squad and that is something that Canales and Mayfield have to figure out in the next few weeks.

Watched more of the A22 from this game.
Yeah. There's a handful of instances where you can tell his mind is made up. Doesn't go through a single progression.
Three egregious instances where Godwin is running free (2 crossers and 1 dig). All from being out wide too, no less. Which, as you know, is impossible (because of coach speak).

hurt feels has turned you into Buggsy . . complete with the strawman
In a nutshell, he's limited. I think he'd make a great back-up QB that can come in and win a game with his energy and "moxie", but he's not carrying your team the way upper tier QB's can.
I still go back to the 49ers game when he had Godwin right in front of him for the 1st down, or Cade Otton breaking back in wide open - against a safety that overran the route - for a TD, and he holds the ball, moves too close to the pressure and gets strip sacked. That one just sums it up for me. He just has way too many of those.

But, we weren't favored to win that one. So, it doesn't count.
So, he can play like shit. It's excused.
