Darkhorse QB Candidate:  Drew Lock.  He has an arm.  He has mobility.  He has affordability.  Before the season he had a hard-fought battle for the starting job and lost out to perrenial backup Geno Smith.  At the time you had to wonder if you can't even beat out Smith, who can you beat out?  But Smith has turned out to be a legit starting QB.  In retrospect it's no shame that Lock lost out to Smith. He's coming off a $1.4 mil one year contract, so he'll be available for maybe $2 or 3 mil at most.  This will be his 5th year kicking around the NFL without much success.  He's been a team player, and maybe that experience has made him better.  He could provide some competition for Trask.

Guys like Danny Jones and Sam Darnold have struggled but may be finding their footing after four or five years in the league.  Maybe it takes that long for some guys to figure things out.  If you are looking for a dirt cheap QB who can battle for the starting job, Drew Lock could be the guy.

contract projections per PFF

Jackson - 5 years, $260 million or $52M per year.

Geno Smith - 4 years, $150 million or 37.5M per year

Daniel Jones - 4 years, $160 million or $40 per year

Jimmy G - 1 year, $15 million

Jacoby Brissett - 2 years, $16 million

good lord, could you imagine paying that for Smith or Jones.  talk about setting a franchise back

That's too rich for the Bucs' blood.  I think they'll bring in somebody for less than $10 mil for two years.  But they have to be able to throw the deep ball, because there is so much money invested at the WR spot.  So that's the catch.  I don't think Brissett has that ability.

The problem with Lock is that he tends to make bone headed mistakes.  Trask and Lock are in a similar boat in that they tend to make some bonehead mistakes with throws downfield.

Trask has cleaner throwing mechanics and footwork while Lock has the stronger arm to push the ball downfield.  Need a veteran that protects the ball more to push Trask to be efficient and effective not just throwing hail marrys downfield.

Where on Earth do you get his from? If you are getting this from his college days, you do realize that he threw for 69 TD's and only 15 picks, a TD:INT ratio of 4.6:1? He averaged about 13.4 yards per completion (552 completions for 7386 yards). I think you must have him confused for someone else. I sure hope you aren't gleaning this from his preseason play with 3rd and 4th stringers behind crappy o-line play.

IMO you can lock in one thing about the Bucs QB position:  The Bucs won't have a clearcut #1 QB going into camp.   Trask will battle it out with a  low budget free agent QB.  Even if you bring in a Brissett or Minshew type they won't be guaranteed the starting job.  If they draft a QB, I don't think they would be starting from Day 1, because they aren't in the position to just throw a rookie QB into the starting role.  He would have to blow the doors off people in training camp.  Not likely when you are talking about the 19th pick or a Day 2 pick.

What could change things? If they bring in a OC who prefers a RPO type of QB. But I don't see that happening with all the money they are dishing out to Godwin and Evans. If they trade Godwin that would change my opinion, and I think trading Godwin is a distinct possibility.  So we'll see.  I would predict that at the end of the day after all is said and done Trask will be the Week 1 starter..... I would predict that, but we don't know who the OC is yet.   So I'll get back to that topic once that happens.

Don't be trying to confuse the Trask haters with facts.

Here are some comments about Trask from someone who actually plays the game and has insight on Trask.

Legendary Bucs linebacker Lavonte David, a pending free agent, put on his general manager hat today in Phoenix.

David hopped on WDAE radio and was asked to play GM and roll out what he thinks the Bucs should do at quarterback.

David had a clear vision.

“Obviously you want to get a top-of-market guy like Aaron Rodgers, Derek Carr, but in the situation that we’re in, being a GM and being realistic, you have to go with Kyle Trask,” David said. “You have to put all your all your faith in Kyle Trask. You drafted him in the second round. You got the pieces; you gotta put the pieces around him before he can succeed. And you got to get the right offensive coach in who can be able to develop him to be the playmaker that we all know he can be.

“I love what I see [of Trask]. He’s a prototypical guy. You know, he’s able to move. He’s got a nice ball. Getting a chance to compete against him, obviously when he was on the scout team he made a lot of good throws against [the Bucs defense] and stuff like that. So I definitely feel like he could be a guy who could, you know, come in and help turn us into a winning football team.”

Yeah, I don't really understand the whole negative narrative, other than those who just hate him because he was a Gator. I watched him absolutely dominate some top SEC defenses, and yet people think he's just going to suck because he's running our complex offense with receivers who don't play in regular season games and does so behind a makeshift offensive line. It's clear the staff that was here isn't good at developing QB's. I hope the Bucs bring in someone that can scheme subpar talent open using a relatively QB friendly offense. If they do, I think Trask will excel and we won't need to hunt for the next guy. But we'll see.

Both Lock and Trask are inexperienced so I expect them to make mistakes.  That is a given.

But keep in mind that people looking at Lock are just looking at his rocket arm because he isn't going to make less mistakes than Trask IMO.

You're comparing someone with ZERO starts in the NFL versus someone with over 20 starts.

This is the take you were called out on.

Please point out Trask's "boneheaded mistakes with throws downfield".

Another factoid about Trask.  The offensive coordinator who made the judgment to put him at 3rd string was fired for having bad judgment.  But I don't blame the Bucs for not playing Trask.  Brady never came out of the game.  If he ever did you wanted the experienced guy to be ready to come in.  Nobody on the Bucs coaching staff gave a rats ass about 2023.

As for Lock, he wasn't drafted in the first round because he was inconsistent and needed work.  Well he's coming into his 5th year now.  Sometimes it takes time for these guys to develop.  Geno Smith wasn't a good QB in his early years.  Daniel Jones wasn't a good QB, but he's improved.  Tannehill.  Goff.  Sometimes these guys improve after they've been in the league for a while.  Sometimes they don't.  But  this is the type of QB the Bucs are going to explore.  They have to find that diamond in the rough.

IMO Daniel Jones could be available if the Giants don't resign him. The Giants rather than the Jets could go after Rodgers. Why pay Jones $35-$40M if they could trade for Rodgers? If OC Mike Kafka stays and Jones doesn't sign, Rodgers makes sense to me. Could the Bucs afford $140 to $160M over 4 years? If the Bucs hire Shea Tierney, Jones' QB coach, as OC it could be a good combo!

"Sources: #Raiders QB Derek Carr has informed the team he won’t accept a trade to the #Saintsor any other team. The team is expected to release him and he’ll be a top free agent."

- Per Ian Rapoport.
