Although cap is tight, there are easy ways to create 2-3 million of space (if needed) without jeopardizing the future in a tangible way.
Although the season has started, I think we can still upgrade the team at a reasonable cost. If I were Licht, I’d be Looking at the following opportunities:
1. Pass catching RB: we’d benefit from a rb who can pass block better and show more wiggle than McCoy. Maybe Vaughn is the guy this year, maybe not. I imagine we could trade for Ogunbawale or Dion Lewis for a 7th and both cost less than a mil. Neither player appears to be in their team’s long-term plans and have a rapport with TB12. If Duke Johnson were cheaper, I could see him in play with the changes at the Texans.
2. Clay Matthews: with each passing week, he gets cheaper as a rotational guy. Q. Bell would most likely reach the practice squad or we could use OJs spot... we don’t really need to carry 4 TEs the way we use them. Matthews may bust, but we’re not playing Bell anyway and I’m not sold on Nelson creating an impact.
My intent is not to start a regurgitation of Licht’s past decisions, but to look forward at ways to bring us closer to the Super Bowl in a reasonable, cost-controlled way.
