Look, there are three phases of football that must be played consistently well. Offense, Defense, and Special Teams. As of right now, we don't look terrible at any level. Offensively, we couldn't run. But you know what? There aren't many teams, if any, that can be much more successful against the Panthers. The best thing they do as a team is stop the run. That makes for a bad match up to our disadvantage. Without being able to run the ball and subsequently take pressure off of Josh, we will be FORCED to win games based solely off of our defensive performance. Take a look around the NFL. It's week one, and pretty much EVERY defense has showed some weaknesses. I hate to say give it time, but yeah.. This team just needs time to click. And if you look at the fourth quarter, it looks like that may have happened already. Just a bit too late to save game one. But either way, when we face teams that can neutralize the run game, we can expect to have to win ugly. But against most of the teams we will play this year, we should have more success running the ball than we did yesterday. We don't face the Jets or the Cardinals or the 49ers, we WILL run well this season and that will make all the difference, as our passing game follows close behind. As far as defense goes, for all of the success Anderson had throwing the ball, the Panthers still only scored twice. We kept them from breaking 17 which was the philosophy of Sapp, Brooks, and Dungy. Can you really expect more out of McCoy, David and Lovie? Our special teams played well, especially Solomon Patton and Mike Koenen. Even our O Line, without Mankins, looked OKAY for the most part. As long as we stay hungry, don't panic, and play smart, we will still win the division through a lot of last minute, nail biting games.
