this all much ado about nothing.  why would we trade one of the better players on the team when we dont really need to?

Because we really do need to. Revis is a win now player, Bucs are not a win now team. Bucs need picks, Revis is worth picks.

That's such a narrow minded statement.  Say we trade Revis and Lovie gets us to the playoffs next year and then we feel like we're only "one player away." You can build for the long term while keeping your star players.  See: Packers signing Woodson, yet not winning the super bowl until years later.

We would have a full arsenal of draft picks and cap space. DRAFT DRAFT DRAFT. Packers didn't give up a #1 and #3 for Woodson and their QB depth chart was Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers.

But then you have to waste a pick, or cap space on a corner who, chances are, aren't going to be near the caliber of player Revis is currently.  And I don't know about you, but I'm tired of mediocre players, especially in the secondary.  Maybe i'm just jaded from all the years of Jovan Haye, Chis Hovan, Geno Hayes, Sabby, Myron, etc...hell, Leonard Johnson becomes a starter at this point if you trade Revis...and my nerves won't let me handle that lol

Okay, we have to add a corner. You guys can't get the idea that if we're good in 3-4 years Revis is going to be damn near done and you're going to begging for that $48-64M of cap space back and picks from this draft.

3-4 Years?!?!  Most great corners play well into their 30's.  And I've never looked back and said, "boy, I really wish I had that cap space from the '09 season back.  Revis' contract has flexibility to it, if anything you restructure to add more cap space to the current year, but even that's not necessary because we'll be able to do what we want in free agency this year.

Who cares about this year? Why is it so important? This is the perfect year to take a step back as a franchise so we can take 2-3 steps forward. And anyone besides me think about what our cap is going to look like when our QB, All-Pro LB and two starting defensive ends are making more than $4.9M COMBINED?

People's answer to that will be that we can cut him at any point because of how his contract is structured.  Those people would be correct, but they would ignore the fact that we would have to let him go for nothing.  If we get a nice offer for him we really have to consider it.

See, that's where we differ.  You're ok with taking steps back.  I'm not!!  I've seen too many coaches come in and make contenders out of pitiful teams during their 1st year to be ok with taking steps back.  We've been taking steps backwards since the Super bowl win.And where is this QB you speak of hiding?  IF we draft a QB this year, that's worth giving a huge contract to, that still won't be until 4-5 years down the line...at which point you can STILL look at a restructure for Revis.  As for the other stars up for extensions, that money can come from people who aren't earning their money, like Penn, Joseph, Zuttah, Barth, and Koenen.  Again, bad teams don't get better by getting rid of their best players.

Dungy and his staff took over a 7-9 team and started 1-8.

I don't know who/where the QB is. If they want to draft a QB, ok. If they want to go with Glennon on 2014 and see what he does, ok. So now that you've cut the whole offensive line except Dotson we have to use cap room on those too.

I get where you are coming from JC, but I think that when you yank a few examples out of the cap (good ones, for sure), it's pretty misleading. The reality is yes - we will likely be paying more for those positions in the future. But we are also likely to see a lot of savings elsewhere - in 2015, our 3-6 players in terms of the cap are Nicks, Goldson, Penn, and Joseph. Those guys are worth about $28 million in cap room combined. Barth and Koenen are worth $6 million. There's quite a bit of wiggle room here.

Ok, that was almost 20 years ago.  Jim Harbaugh took over a crappy team and has been to 3 straight NFC championship games and a super bowl appearance.  Andy Reid just took over the worst team in football and had them undefeated through 9 games, went to the playoffs, and almost won a division that has Peyton Manning in it.  Chuck Pagano took over the previous worst team in the NFL and has been to back to back playoffs...enough of this stepping backwards garbage...that's quite literally for losers.Lovie/Licht are already considering replacing members on the O-line.  Because that makes sense, and we have/will have the space to do it without cutting/trading Revis.  What doesn't make sense is creating new holes on your team when you already have plenty to fix as is.  Btw, McCoy's cap hit isn't going up that much, if at all from what he's going to count against the cap this year.  And LVD can't even ask for an extension until two years from now(if I'm wrong on that someone please correct me).  So, all you would be doing is hurting one area of the team to MAYBE fix another area.  I'd rather keep the proven star.

Bucs can win now. Absolutely can. Guys have to come together and start working together. Building a good locker room is a start. Williams pulls his head out, we sign a pass rusher of the legit variety (or two!), and thicken up the QB ranks and the Bucs can swing a haymaker, IMO. And connect with it. Plus, the draft is going to yield some talent, and I'm excited about the quality of talent, as we all know by now. Revis is not an issue right now. At all. Win now.
