Greg Auman ?@gregauman 6mTo be clear, Bucs' Michael Johnson and Alterraun Verner earn a combined $15.375 million per year, less than Bucs would have paid Revis.
Welp, Verner for 4 years $26.5 mln per. Almost $10 mln less a year than Revis. Thought Verner would command much more, but this definitely helps blunt things a lil.Still wish we don't just cut the guy, but basically getting Michael Johnson and Verner for Revis if you look at it like that.
It's the Verner deal that changes things. If Verner signed for $4 million more like we expted based on the Davis/Shields deals, it's not nearly as good. I'm shocked for how little he signed for and don't understand how we pulled it off. Any other day and you're looking at bringing in average-at-best players who get inflated values (hello Michael Johnson) because of free agency to replace a sure thing that will likely be the best at his craft again next year. But getting Verner for so little...

Sorry, would much rather have Revis, but nice moves.

The risk is if Verner and/or Johnson are bust/mediocre FA signings. Very few "big" FA signings work out (look at Finnegan, someone who many here wanted as is gone so soon). If you get consistently 6 sacks from Johnson and ok play from Verner, this could turn out to be a mistake. So while right now it looks good to almost everyone (including me) it's far, far from a sure thing.
Now trade Revis to Oakland or Clevland for whatever they are willing to give up. Even a 7th rounder just to screw him the greedy jerk! Preferably Oakland so he has to play for a crappy team that is potentially getting crappier!
I want a strong team built on solid foundations....not a couple of superstars who are really only there because you grossly overpaid for them. I get the cult of personality and all the fawning over Revis' skill-set....he's a great player no doubt....but he alone will not get the Bucs to the next level....there's just too many other parts required and with his lack of willingness to restructure/renegotiate the contract, Lovie/Licht had no choice but to make moves for match their vision of long-term prosperity.
Glad I wasn't one of the guys freaking out like an idiot over this one. I said wait and see first.....and we fucking slayed it. We are a better team today than we were yesterday.
We're going to have Verner/Tillman/Banks starting for a combined less than Revis.

And the risk of paying Revis is that he's turning 29 (the same age Finnegan started to lose a step) and won't live up to the contract he signs. I'd rather go with the 25 yr old pro-bowler, and the 27 y.o. pass rusher.
we **CENSORED**ing slayed it. We are a better team today than we were yesterday.
No doubt.
Really, I'll be even more confused if we straight cut Revis at this point. Can't believe with what's gone on today we would cut him just to move that 4th to a 3rd. The leverage is squarely back in our court. We didn't oversign to the point we HAVE to do anything on friday. I can't believe we would not be able to get at least a 3rd for Darrelle contract in tact at this point. That would get us 2 draft picks instead of 1 by straight cutting him. There is just too much cap room left on too many teams that won't be able to spend it given what's still out there to be had.
We've never been in a rush to cut Revis. We'll do it if it helps us, or not a all. So much pointless drama
Well I definitely didn't want to see Revis go but I'm all smiles now! I still think we shouldn't cut him and I actually think we have some legitimate leverage on Cleveland now that we sign Verner.
....and we **CENSORED**ing slayed it.
Amen, brother.
